6 Tips to Reduce Your Risk of Selfie Elbow:
1) Change Hands- Selfie elbow is caused by repeatedly using the same arm to take selfies. Despite how awkward it might feel, switch it up and use your non-dominant arm to take selfies with.
2) Switch Fingers- By switching up fingers you will take the strain off that one specific overused arm muscle. Also even better use the timer function on your phone!
3) Elbow Lock- Avoid fully extending and locking your elbow when taking selfies. When you fully extend your arm and click the picture button it increases the tension and strain on your extensor tendons and muscles. This can even cause small muscle tears too.
4) Know your pain boundary- This might sound too simple but if it hurts stop doing it. If your elbow, or wrist starts to feel tight, throb, ache, or pain take a break.
5) Limit screen time- The best way to avoid selfie elbow is to limit screen time. Not only will this decrease risk of overuse but it will also strengthen your non-dominant part of the brain.
6) Stretch your arm muscles- Stretching and gaining flexibility are 2 keys in the defense against injury. A simple stretch for your wrist/arm is gently flexing and extending your wrist downward with your hands relaxed so you're not making a fist will stretch your forearm muscles.

As I’ve continued to learn over my years as a physical therapist & weightlifter, there’s a few things I’ve found to be extremely important I want to share with you today.

1) If you train hard, you need to recover just as hard. You can get away with poor recovery for a little, but eventually it will eventually catch up to you in the form of stagnating progress & injury.

2) Technique quality is 🔑. Technique quality is like roots to a tree. We’ve all seen trees that looked big blown over by storms because their root system wasn’t sufficient to hold them up. The better you move, the more you develop your own “root system.” This gives you more potential to lift big and do so for longer! This doesn’t mean missed reps & problems don’t occur - they just should be learning opportunities in the process of building better technique!

3) I hate when athletes say “well my back hurts because I deadlifted heavy yesterday.” It shouldn’t if you’re lifting with optimal technique & proper loads for your current capacity. Know the difference between hurt & muscle fatigue. We want to stimulate not annihilate.😉

4) If you hurt & your medical doctor says “let’s do a cortisone shot & rest...see me in 3 weeks if it’s still hurting” - go see a different doctor. Cortisone is like a piece of duct tape over a hole in your cars tire. It doesn’t fix the problem at all & is ONLY a temporary solution. You NEED to fix the cause with movement based rehabilitation.
