After a tough finish in Salinas, Yuma kicked off early—but warm temps, recent rain, and unusual humidity have pushed crops nearly two weeks ahead, causing supply gaps and higher markets.

What We’re Seeing:
• Arugula & Spinach: Soft, inconsistent texture
• Spring Mix: Better overall, still uneven at times
• Romaine: Outer‑leaf damage; hearts remain strong
• Iceberg: Pale color, variable texture
• Broccoli: Brown bead, pin rot, slow growth
• Cauliflower: Yellowing + mildew showing as black spots post‑harvest

Expect tight supplies and elevated markets over the next 3–4 weeks. We’ll keep you updated as conditions evolve.

🌄 Spring transition to Salinas begins late March through early April.

🚨Extreme Market Alert: Oranges 🚨

🍊Small sizes for navel oranges are on alert as the crop is sizing up. The entire California navel crop is running large this season, as trees are not producing small sizes in meaningful volume. The situation grows worse daily.

California Navel oranges continue to face a severe industry‑wide shortage of small fruit. Extended fog, intermittent rains, and uneven sunlight earlier in the season have pushed size profiles heavily toward larger counts while drastically reducing availability of small sizes such as 88s, 113s, and 138s, which remain extremely limited and are not expected to improve throughout the remainder of the Navel season or the transition into Valencia’s (June).

Weather impacts from previous growing cycles, including excessive rain and sun extremes in previous years, directly reduced the formation of small oranges in the current cycle. Oranges are alternate baring; last season had abundant small fruit so it was anticipated this year would produce larger, but the situation is more extreme than anticipated due to the rains and weather conditions aiding the growth.

Recommendation to open size spec where possible, the crop is peaking in a 72/56/88.

If you're searching for a solution for small orange needs, cara cara, bloods and Mandarins are great domestic options. 🍊

❗️URGENT MARKET ALERT ❗️

The U.S. carrot market remains industry-wide tight due to unprecedented rain and cold conditions in California, particularly in the Bakersfield growing region, which have significantly impacted harvest conditions and yields.

Recent storms have further delayed harvesting, resulting in elevated crop loss and continued prorations across the category. California is currently extremely limited in larger-size carrots (Tables and Jumbos), with an anticipated four-week gap that could extend longer, reflecting broader industry-wide shortages.

Supply pressure is expected to persist through the remainder of the Bakersfield season as the industry transitions into Imperial Valley winter production in mid-February, where early growing conditions have been favorable but risks remain.

Recommendation:
Customers should plan for continued size constraints, consider substituting cello carrots, large baby carrots, or multi-pack options where feasible, and engage early on forward needs as availability gradually improves.

📢 Extreme Market Alert: Celery

Operators who rely on fresh celery should take note of limited supplies this week.
Here's what you need to know:

Supplies remain very light with demand continuing to rise. Additional growing regions are expected to start soon, but market pricing will remain escalated for the next few weeks. Pricing should improve once supplies increase out of Yuma.

🚨Market Alert: Apples

September’s prolonged heat required heavy irrigation to protect tree health and maintain fruit quality. While this effort succeeded, it also led to larger fruit sizes across the industry.

Read on for a crop update and suggested adjustments:

🍎Gala

Washington State 4M+ boxes below last year’s volume. Current sizing trends show Galas peaking medium to big sizes, leaving very few 125/138ct available. Gala market will be higher as the year goes on. It's highly recommended, if possible, to switch to other red varieties such as Fuji or Pink Lady.

🍏Granny Smith

The overall crop is packing big sizes. 125/138 are virtually unavailable. Unfortunately, this is the only green apple variety without an equivalent. It is forecast to be on premium market cost. Upon possibilities, it is encouraged to start planning for other fruits as alternative.

📢 MARKET ALERT: Pineapples🍍

The pineapple industry is entering one of its most challenging periods in many years, and consumers should be prepared for continued tightening supply and elevated prices as we move into Q1 2026.

Excessive rainfall, root rot and fusarium, low sunlight, adverse weather and fungal pressure are all creating a perfect storm which in turn produces smaller fruit and lower overall yields, increasing costs and reducing supply. 🌪️

We will continue to keep you in the know with proactive recommendations as they become necessary such as potentially opening up spec on sizing. 🍍

For both grapes and melons, this transition is a critical period where weather, harvest timing, logistics, and market behavior all influence availability, quality, and market pricing.

🍇Grapes

✅The U.S. grape season, primarily through California, typically runs from July to late November or early December.

✅Offshore import season starts in December and lasts up until May.

✅Mexico import season is used to bridge the gap between late May and July, when domestic grapes start again.

🍈Melons

✅The domestic season from California and Arizona typically runs from May to late November.

✅Imported melons, primarily from Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica, are sourced from December to May.

⚠️ EXTREME MARKET ALERT: Strawberries 🍓

Strawberries are still under an extreme market alert this week due to various factors. Here's what you need to know:

▪️California received 4–6 inches of rain over the course of last week, halting harvest and pushing most orders.
▪️No harvest is expected Thursday due to Thanksgiving.
▪️ Mexico’s cooler temperatures cut yields by 70%+, offering no relief. Additionally, there have been delays in trucks crossing the border.
▪️Florida has started very light production, with significant volume not expected until late December.
▪️Quality remains good despite smaller sizing.
