🧠 Hormones and Dry Eyes? 👁️
New research brings hope to an often overlooked symptom of perimenopause: severe dry eye disease.
🔬 In this randomized controlled trial, perimenopausal women with severe dry eye symptoms were treated with:
✔️ Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT)
✔️ Autologous serum eye drops (AS)
✔️ Both ERT + AS
💊 The treatment protocol:
• 2 mg of nilestriol taken orally every 15 days
• 2 mg of progesterone daily added for 15 days after the second nilestriol dose
• Autologous serum applied directly to the eyes throughout the treatment cycle
📈 After 30 days:
✅ Estradiol (E2) levels increased
✅ FSH and LH levels decreased
✅ Tear breakup time and Schirmer scores improved significantly
✅ Inflammatory markers (VEGF, IL-1β, TNF-α) dropped most in the combo group (ERT + AS)
✅ Corneal staining decreased
✅ Kupperman scores (a menopause symptom scale) fell steadily
This is one of the few studies focused specifically on perimenopausal patients, and it’s exciting to see new, high-quality research in such an underserved area of women’s health. Hormonal changes during this transition impact far more than just hot flashes.
