[09/05/18]   Did you know our weightloss program has multiple services that help YOU with what you need and want!

Dr. CAREing has a Dietician Service and many others!

Dr. CAREing's dietitians are experts in food and nutrition ("dietetics"). They advise our patients on what to eat in order to lead a healthy lifestyle or achieve a specific health-related goal.
The Dr. CAREing Registered Dietitians (RD or RDN) are dietitians who meet academic and professional requirements, including earning at least a bachelor's degree, and fulfilling a specially-designed, accredited nutrition curriculum, passing a registration exam, and completing a supervised program of practice at a health care facility, foodservice organization or community agency. After learning about patients' health history, favorite foods, eating and exercise habits, an RD will help individuals set goals and prioritize.
Follow-up visits often focus on maintenance and monitoring progress.
The majority of RDs work in the treatment and prevention of disease (administering medical nutrition therapy, as part of one of our Heath-Gain/weightloss programs), right in the clinic.

[08/22/18]   Dr. CAREing's Preventive Medicine offers bioidentical hormones for aging men who are also facing a drop in natural hormone production. This season of life, called andropause, involves a male decline in natural hormones, namely testosterone.

The male decline in hormones is not as sudden or sharp as it is in women, but symptoms may still be present. The therapy we provide with bioidentical hormones evaluates the hormone levels in men and offers natural, individualized therapies to restore hormone levels. Many men have benefited from Dr. CAREing's Preventive Medicine’s focus on men’s health.

Call today to make an appointment with Dr. Astrid Gutsmann in Allen, Texas (972) C-A-R-E-i-n-g (227-3464) or sign up online to feel better and younger again.

[08/08/18]   Dr. CAREing offers Hormone Replacement Therapy!
Everyone is looking to have balanced hormones, which is essential to maintaining good health, long life and slower aging process. In contrast, the level and bioavailability of hormones declines with increasing age. For example, men lose the ability to produce testosterone at a rate of about 1%-2% per year from their mid twenties, and women lose Progesterone at a similar rate in their early thirties. However, once women become menopausal, their Estrogen declines so rapidly that they reach a point of having increased risk for osteoporosis, dementia, hot flashes, insomnia, weight gain, vaginal dryness, low libido and more.
Most patients having a T-3 level of less than 3 are likely to have under active thyroid, which leads to fatigue, brain fog, memory issues, dry skin, constipation, infertility, hypertension, unexplained weight gain, hair loss, puffing of the skin, etc.
Bio-Identical hormone Replacement, when needed, and taken the right way, can change a person's life in as little as one month. It is important to note that there is a major difference between Bio-Identical Hormones and Synthetic hormones, especially when it pertains to Estrogen and Progesterone. In contrast, bio-identical hormone replacement studies have consistently shown beneficial effects.

How much weight do people gain over the holidays?

If you ask people how much weight an average person gains over the holidays, you will hear an answer somewhere in the range of 5-10 pounds over this holiday season. If 5-10 pounds of weight gain is the "AVERAGE" this means that some people are gaining much more. To gain health it is better to start you’re a new years resolution diet early - BEFORE you gain a possible extra 5-10 pounds.

The United States has a population of roughly 300 million people – if we gained an average of 5 lbs over the holidays, as a nation we are about to put on 1.5 billion pounds this year alone!

In contrast to what people think, the 5-10 lb weight gain statistic seems a bit strange, so I decided to look it up. Fortunately, I came across an excellent article from the New England Journal of Medicine that examines this very issue. Back in 2000, Yanovsky and colleagues examined the amount of weight gain during the American holiday season (from American Thanksgiving until New Year’s). Then, as now, this claim of 5-10 lbs holiday weight gain was quite common – Yanovsky reports that organizations ranging from CNN to the Texas Medical Association used the information in press releases during the holiday season of that year. In addition, self-report studies tell us that people believe that they gain 5 lbs or more over the holidays, but that does not necessarily mean that they do.

Fortunately, Yanovsky and colleagues objectively measured the body weight of 195 men and women over the course of the year. They report that the average weight gain from mid-November to mid-January was less than 1 lb! Less than 10% of the participants gained 5 lbs or more. The weight gain during the holiday season was, however, significantly greater than that during the pre- or post-holiday period, and the holiday weight-gain was not lost over the course of the year.

So, what does this study tell us? First of all, it tells us that the idea that the average person gains large amounts of weight during the holidays is completely untrue. On a somewhat more serious note, the Yanovsky study also tells us that on average, people do gain a small but significant amount of weight over the holidays that are maintained throughout the course of the year. Not enough to warrant fear mongering, but enough to cause some concern – a pound or two a year can add up over time. And some people do experience significant weight gain, a phenomenon that was significantly more common in overweight and obese individuals. It is an issue that is worth following, but one that I hope people aren’t losing sleep over.

So remember, as we move deeper into the holiday season, don’t let the gingerbread men get you down. Enjoy your holiday, but try to not overeat – gain health by losing weight.

Are female physicians better for your health?

An article was published on December 19, 2016 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) titled “ Comparison of Hospital Mortality and Readmission Rates for Medicare Patients Treated by Male vs Female Physicians.” The cross-sectional study showed that female physicians provided care that resulted in significantly:

1) Lower mortality rates; and
2) Lower hospital readmission rates

[12/13/16]   A New Year's resolution is a promise to do an act of self-improvement and is a tradition that dates back to the earliest civilizations. For Example, (a) the Babylonians (circa 23rd Century B.C.E.) made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. (b) The Romans began each year by making promises to the god “Janus,” for whom the month of “January” is named.
Today, the concept of a New Year’s Resolution, regardless of creed, is to reflect annually upon self-improvement.
The most popular New Year’s resolutions include resolutions to improve physical well-being:
(i) get a medical wellness exam;
(ii) eat healthy food;
(iii) lose weight; and
(iv) quit smoking;
Dr. CAREing is the medical clinic that can help you achieve your New Year’s Resolutions of "Gaining-Health." We have specific programs for each of the resolutions listed above. Get a head-start on next year’s on Health-Related-New-Year-Resolutions by making an appointment TODAY. If you are still working on last year’s resolutions – there is still time!
