Holidays that involve family gatherings can be a most difficult time of year for those of us suffering a loss. Decorations have already filled the shelves of stores even before Halloween.

Now we’re in November and the bittersweet memories of those special holidays loom ever closer on the calendar.

But we needn’t drown in dread and despair. We need only remind ourselves that our loved ones are still here with us in love and in spirit.

Sometimes it feels like we’re all alone in our grief after loved ones pass. But in this life, each of us will experience loss. We are not alone.

We are also not alone because our loved ones continue on in spirit, watching over us. They want us to be happy, they want us to continue learning and growing. They help us when they can.

When difficulties arise, as in life they will, I try to find the silver lining and keep my eyes on that.

When I’m missing my daughter who was lifted back into spirit 3 1/2 years ago, I can land on the gratitude I feel that she is no longer grappling with the effects of having cancer. She is free.

Losing her was so traumatic that it opened my senses so wide that I became able to communicate with the spirit world and feel her presence.
