Shoppers beware… not to be afraid but to be Empowered!

A post from Dr Mark Hyman’s newsletter about increased cancer risks with certain preservatives in our food follows.
Here’s his advice- if it has a long ingredient list with names you can't pronounce, it doesn't belong in your body.”
Spoken just like my Mother!

This is one reason I bake bread!

“Food Preservatives Linked to Higher Cancer Risk

A new BMJ study tracking over 105,000 people for nearly eight years found that higher exposure to certain preservatives (commonly used in ultra-processed foods) was associated with an increased cancer risk. Potassium sorbate raised overall cancer risk by 14% and breast cancer risk by 26%. Sodium nitrite was linked to a 32% higher risk of prostate cancer. These chemical additives are in everything from deli meat and cheese to packaged baked goods, dried fruits, and packaged sauces – and the mechanism likely involves oxidative stress and DNA damage. While more research is needed, the results are strong enough to warrant caution. Long story short: if it has a long ingredient list with names you can't pronounce, it doesn't belong in your body.”

(BMJ stands for The British Medical Journal — now officially branded simply as BMJ.

It’s a highly respected, peer-reviewed medical journal that publishes large-scale epidemiological studies, clinical research, and public health findings. So when something is described as a “BMJ study,” it generally means the research was published in (or associated with) one of the BMJ journals and has gone through rigorous scientific review.

In short: it’s a legit, heavyweight medical source—not a blog or industry-funded fluff piece.)

So would you like to hear a story…?
I call it a tale of two customers.
It was a blustery day last October. We were at a festival in Langhorne, PA, but the weather was cold and windy, unlike previous sunny fall events there. With the weather uncooperative, the crowds slowed & as the end of the day drew near, we were longing to get home.
A customer stops to look at our soaps and asks a few questions. His name is Tom. He asked what made my soaps different, so I was happy to tell him about all the ingredients we use & all those we shun, like seed oils and toxic dyes & how bad they are for our health. What you rub on your skin enters your bloodstream in seconds. He responded with, “oh, another thing to be afraid of.” Ah, but I told him, what an opportunity now to become aware of these ingredients & know to avoid them. He smiled & said, I’ll try the Rustic Pine.
I was thrilled that he was open to considering how critical it is we know & understand ingredients in our personal care products!
I was so recharged I hardly noticed how much later it was and almost time to pack up. And just then, another man stopped at my table. Most of my customers are females, so this was a bit out of the ordinary. He said, hello, my name is John and I came here to tell you today that your soap has changed my life.
Wow.
He told me how he suffered from severe eczema-like rashes all over his face and body and using my soaps cured him for the first time in his life.
I cried.
I thanked him for sharing & realized this is why I do what I do.
People need to matter & feel valued but we also want to add value in return. This is my sense of purpose. This is Linda’s Healthy Living. This is who I am & why I do what I do. I’ve identified a genuine need & I am grateful to meet it with each & every product I make.
My promise is that my products will always be free of palm, soy, mineral, corn, canola and grape seed oils, always dye free & free of all phthalates. I will honor the plants & animals that are such an important part of our offerings and respect our bountiful planet with sustainability. This is Linda’s Healthy Living. As an Ingredient Activist and Healing Enthusiast, I encourage you to Beware all of these toxic ingredients! But there is some good news! If you are in California, this new ban on these toxic ingredients takes effect next year. But wherever you live, read the label and dont buy products with these poisons in them.
Potassium bromate for example, is showing up in all kinds of baked goods. If it’s on the label, don’t buy it.

Follow us for more updates to keep informed about toxic ingredients in our food and skincare.
And here’s the good news…

California Food Additives Ban (AB 418) — Effective Jan. 1, 2027

California passed a first-of-its-kind law that prohibits the manufacture, sale, or distribution of food products containing certain additives in the state, starting in 2027. The key banned additives include:
• Potassium bromate — used as a flour improver in baked goods.
• Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) — used in some citrus drinks.
• Propyl paraben — a preservative in tortillas, shelf-stable icing, etc.
• Red Dye No. 3 (FD&C Red No. 3) — color additive in candies/snacks.
These substances are banned under that law because of links to cancer and other health concerns, and California follows earlier bans by the EU and other jurisdictions.

🔹 Titanium dioxide was considered earlier in committee versions of the bill, but it was not included in the final law enacted.

📌 Effective date: January 1, 2027
