A new study recently came to my attention that could affect patients using transmucosal buprenorphine-containing medicines for chronic pain. And, as with any orally administered and dissolving medication, maintaining tooth health should also be a priority.

If you are taking this (or any) oral medication, please consider talking to your dentist to make them aware of these medications and try to take extra steps to help lessen the risk of serious dental problems.

One strategy for maintaining your teeth is: After the medicine is completely dissolved, take a large sip of water, swish it around your teeth and gums, swallow, and wait at least 1 hour before brushing their teeth. By waiting to brush, you allow time for your mouth to gradually return to oral "homeostasis," to avoid any mechanical damage that may occur due to immediate brushing. Other tips include using certain mouthwashes to protect the teeth and gums, a dentist-prescribed tooth protectant, and even dentist-approved, sugar-free gum chewing to maintain moisture in the mouth.

Orally dissolving medications containing buprenorphine are linked to severe dental problems, including total tooth loss, the FDA warns.

For more than three decades, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been recognised as a reliable tool to manage chronic pain when simpler treatment routes fail to elicit a satisfactory response. Not surprisingly, the therapy has seen a number of evolutions since it was first introduced, including innovations designed to overcome some imperfections associated with earlier technology.

One such advancement, a high-frequency SCS system with strong clinical evidence of efficacy, recently received FDA approval for a specific indication to treat people with painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN).

Nevro’s HFX for PDN is the only SCS solution to be FDA-approved to treat the condition, often characterised by persistent numbness, pain, and tingling in the hands and feet.
