❄️🦶 Cold Weather + Diabetes = Extra Risk for Your Feet.

If you have diabetes, winter weather can be more than uncomfortable, it can be dangerous. Cold temperatures reduce circulation, and for those with diabetic arterial disease, this can increase the risk of wounds, infections, and slow healing.

⚠️ Watch for warning signs:
• Cold or numb feet
• Color changes in toes or skin
• Foot pain when walking
• Sores that heal slowly

Early evaluation and proper care can help prevent serious complications.

Cam Skattebo Injury Reaction from Dr. Short!

“These types of injuries are common in high-contact sports,” explains Dr. Short. “When the foot is planted and the body twists suddenly, it can cause the bones around the ankle—the tibia and fibula—to fracture, and sometimes even dislocate.”

Such injuries are serious and often require surgery involving plates, screws, and weeks in a cast or walking boot. Healing can take 10–12 weeks or more, often ending an athlete’s season.

However, Dr. Short reminds patients that not all ankle injuries involve broken bones. “A severe sprain, or torn ligament, can actually take longer to heal than a fracture due to the ligament’s limited blood supply,” he notes.

For everyday athletes or weekend warriors, the takeaway is clear:
✅ Don’t ignore ankle pain or swelling.
✅ Get evaluated early to prevent long-term instability.
✅ Proper treatment can mean the difference between a few weeks of rest and months of recovery.

👣 If you’ve twisted your ankle or are still limping weeks later, visit Allentown Family Foot Care. Our team specializes in diagnosing and treating sports-related foot and ankle injuries—so you can get back on your feet faster.
