Students use the evidence-based lectures and articles provided in the OPTA program to determine the best interventions and exercises to treat a variety of different hip and knee diagnoses, including osteoarthritis. Travis Miller, OPTA student, is prescribing exercises to strengthen the lower extremity. There is strong evidence supporting the use of exercise to increase function and decrease pain for a patient with osteoarthritis.

Our Pediatric Physical Therapy Resident, Dr. Grather, spent time at Cranial Technologies as part of her experiential learning here at St. Luke’s. Dr. Grather was able to observe evaluations and learn more about the evidence-based research guiding current treatment timelines for cranial remodeling devices. She will be able to directly apply this information to her clinical practice while treating infants with torticollis and plagiocephaly.

Pictured here is Betsy McCormick, DPT reviewing the Near Point of Convergence test with the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residents, which is a clinical assessment tool used to measure the closest point at which the eyes can maintain convergence while focusing on a near target. Dr. McCormick spoke about this clinical assessment tool, as well as the role of physical therapists in evaluating and treating patients post-concussion through evidence-based practice.

Last week, the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residents received instruction in thoracic spine manual therapy techniques from Rachel Stitt, DPT. Pictured here, Dr. Stitt demonstrates a high velocity low amplitude thrust to improve spinal range of motion and decrease pain in the neck and upper back. The residents learned how thoracic mobilizations can positively impact the sympathetic nervous system to modulate pain and restore mobility. These techniques coupled with exercise interventions guided by a thorough clinical exam can optimize care for patients with upper back pain.

Our St. Luke’s Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residents learned techniques for assessing mobility of upper cervical spine last week. Pictured is Stephen Kareha, DPT performing cervical flexion rotation test, a technique used to assess atlantoaxial joint mobility from which approximately 50% of cervical rotation comes. This isolation of the upper cervical spine is crucial for identifying dysfunction that may contribute to neck pain and cervicogenic headaches.
