Hospitalized with a serious back injury, Paula L. had two goals: Return to caring for her young children and keep training for a Spartan Race, which are intense obstacle courses requiring strength, cardio and mobility. This particular race was special to Paula, too, as her team planned to run in honor of a recently lost friend.

But the injury left Paula unsure if she could even participate.

After discharge from the hospital, Paula had only six weeks until race day.

Working quickly and diligently with Good Shepherd’s outpatient physical therapy team in Center Valley, not only did Paula get back on her feet and back to training — she ultimately finished the race.

“The support and the help getting me back on my feet — literally — I could not have done without your help,” Paula said to the Center Valley team. “Thank you so very much!”

Congrats and well done, Paula!

In a recent pediatric speech therapy and occupational therapy co-treatment session at Blandon, Good Shepherd’s team worked with a young patient using switch-adapted toys.

The adapted toys help with cognitive and motor skills, enabling more meaningful engagement in play.

The toys also feature a special touch: Good Shepherd Creates customized the toys and a tablet with 3D-printed switches and mounts — all made in Good Shepherd’s 3D Printing Lab inside of Empower+ in Center Valley.

“Adaptive switches let kids with limited movement or strength play and interact more easily by using a big button or simple switch instead of tiny or complex buttons,” said Good Shepherd Creates Director Amanda Clark. “It makes playtime more fun and independent, while also helping them build confidence and skills."

In addition to Blandon, adapted toys are available at outpatient pediatric sites in Souderton and Palmerton and our inpatient pediatric hospital; they’re coming soon, too, to Hyland Center in South Allentown and Cedar Pointe in West Allentown.

“With 3D-printed switches, therapists can create custom, low-cost options that fit each child’s unique needs,” Clark said.
