2025 PRO-A Lifetime Service to the Recovery Community Award - Mark Flaherty

This award is provided in recognition of a person who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to serving and supporting the recovery process for Pennsylvanians experiencing a substance use condition.

Mark F. Flaherty is a lawyer who has been in recovery in Pittsburgh for the past 34 years. He served as president of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania for 12 years and he has been a member of its board of directors since 1996. LCL is a caring peer assistance program, helping Pennsylvania’s lawyers, judges, members of their families, and law students who are at risk as a result of alcohol and drug use, gambling, depression, or other serious mental illness, carrying out its mission through a combination of confidential helpline services, volunteer support and education.

He is co-chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Lawyers Assistance Program, where he helps to coordinate the Sobriety Monitor’s Program, which provides a means through which lawyers whose alcoholism or addiction have been a mitigating factor in disciplinary actions to return to health and competence and to return to practice if conditions of recovery are met.

He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the M. Patricia Carroll Fund, which provides for partial financial assistance for legal professionals and law students seeking treatment.

He remains an active participant in a 12 step program and hosted a meeting for lawyers and law students since 2001. He is Senior Counsel and Founder of the law firm Flaherty & O’Hara PC, which represents member of the beverage alcohol industry nationwide.
