This Black History Month, NASW Ohio honors the extraordinary contributions of Black social workers, while also acknowledging the hard truths within our profession’s history.

Although social work is rooted in social justice, Black leaders were historically marginalized, excluded from leadership, and not fully recognized for shaping the field.

Their advocacy, scholarship, and community leadership strengthened social work in ways that were too often overlooked.

We honor pioneers like: Mary Church Terrell; Dorothy Height; Whitney M. Young Jr.; E. Franklin Frasier; Lester Blackwell Granger; George Edmund Haynes; and the countless Black social workers whose impact continues today.

Acknowledgment must lead to action. NASW Ohio is committed to advancing racial equity, elevating Black voices, and ensuring our profession lives up to its core values.

Black history is social work history.
