If you’ve ever wondered about the difference between traditional massage therapy and John Barnes Myofascial Release®, you’re not alone.
Massage Therapy is typically focused on relaxing muscles, improving circulation, and relieving tension. Techniques may include kneading, rhythmic strokes, and varying pressure. It’s wonderful for reducing stress, easing sore muscles, and promoting overall relaxation. Many people leave feeling looser, lighter, and refreshed.
John Barnes Myofascial Release (MFR), developed by John F. Barnes, is a very different approach. Instead of working primarily on the muscles, MFR focuses on the fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds and supports every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ in the body. When fascia becomes restricted due to trauma, inflammation, poor posture, or stress, it can create pain and tension patterns that don’t always show up where the original problem began.
Rather than using oil or lotion, MFR uses gentle, sustained pressure held for several minutes. This allows the fascia to slowly soften and release. It’s not about forcing change — it’s about allowing the body to unwind naturally.
John Barnes Myofascial Release works to uncover and treat the root cause of pain and restriction.
For example, shoulder pain might actually stem from restrictions in the chest, rib cage, or even the hips. MFR looks at the body as an interconnected whole and follows the tension patterns to where the restriction truly began.
Both approaches are valuable — it simply depends on what your body needs.
