Alcona SLS Launches “Road Show” Campaign

Alcona schools played host to Executive Director for Student Leadership Services, Dawn Flood who held a training exclusive to Alcona members. The event, attended by 12 Alcona students, featured warm ups, and other engaging activities for Alcona students to use when speaking to youth in other schools. The training stemmed from the group’s presentation at the 2025 SLS Statewide Conference- one that featured the idea of travelling to other schools to spread the prevention messaging of Students Leading Students, in an effort to start new chapters in the area. Flood, the lead trainer and Executive Director saw this as a great opportunity to write a grant to grow this idea across the state. Her successful grant through the Jamie Daniels Foundation will allow five chapters from across the state to train, travel, and spread the message of SLS to their neighboring school districts. An added bonus for each Mentor chapter is the availability of start up dollars for activities and promotion, and dollars to help offset the cost of attending the statewide conference in March 2026, where they will present their work and results.

Alcona Hosts Atlanta for Red Ribbon Week Event

The Alcona chapter of Students Leading Students hosted the 2nd annual Red Ribbon Week event during the JV/Varsity volleyball matches between the Alcona Tigers and the Atlanta Huskies. The Red Ribbon week event is held across the nation each year at the end of October to promote substance abuse awareness and to help end violent acts, like the one that took the life of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena in 1985, the year that the event started. Alcona members gave t-shirts to each team for their warmups, as well as to youth and adults that interacted with their booth- which also featured educational materials for youth and parents, games for kids, and SLS promotional materials. Over 150 people interacted with the members at the booth during the event.

Alcona Prevention Specialist Wears Two Hats

Prevention Specialist Les Thomas, who doubles as the Alcona athletic department announcer, never misses a chance to talk about work after hours. Prevention messages are incorporated at all Alcona Tiger home games throughout the school year using the Substance Free Athletics curriculum. Substance Free Athletics connects to athletes with information from the potential consequences of substance use on athletic performance. On average, each event is attended by 100+ youth and approximately 100 adults – parents, coaches, and members of the community.

SafeTALK presentation in Gand Traverse County at Traverse Area District Library

A safeTalk presentation was given September 15th at the TADL Library in Grand Traverse County by Kiersten's Ride. How to connect persons with su***de ideology to life-affirming help was the topic of the talk. Mostly, noticing and responding to situations where su***de thoughts may be present and recognize the invitations that are often overlooked. Also, moving beyond the common tendency to miss, dismiss, and avoid su***de conversations. We learned to apply the TALK steps: Ask, Listen, and Keep Safe when needed. Community resources were shared and how to connect someone with su***de thoughts to help.

Community partners Before, During and After Incarceration, Traverse Area District Library, Up North Prevention and Michigan State Police brought this vital presentation to Grand Traverse County along with Kiersten's Ride. Thank you to all the partners for your interest and support!

Students Leading Students Summer Camp a Success!

The Students Leading Students (SLS) summer camp was a great success, with strong attendance and enthusiastic participation throughout. One of the highlights this year was the SLS T-Shirt Design Contest, open to all SLS chapter members.

We’re excited to announce that this year’s chapter winner is Maddie from the Posen Chapter! Maddie did an outstanding job creating a fresh and inspiring design for the new SLS t-shirt. She was thrilled to learn that her artwork was selected as the winning design.

Congratulations to Maddie who submitted such a creative design!

Live Well Kalkaska Substance Free Coalition Supports 7th Annual International Overdose Awareness Event

On August 31, the Live Well Kalkaska Coalition attended the 7th Annual International Overdose Awareness Day event hosted by Mom’s on a Mission at the Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park in Traverse City. This worldwide observance is dedicated to honoring the lives lost to overdose, supporting those left behind, and raising awareness about prevention and recovery.

During the event, the Live Well Coalition provided a prevention resource table, offering community members information on local services, safe practices, and ways to get involved in substance misuse prevention efforts here in Kalkaska County. Our team was honored to connect with attendees, share valuable resources, and stand alongside families and advocates committed to saving lives and building healthier communities.

Participating in this event was a powerful reminder that overdose impacts every community, yet together we can make a difference. By joining efforts locally and globally, we continue to break down stigma, spread awareness, and promote hope for recovery.

We are grateful to Mom’s on a Mission for hosting this important event for the seventh year in a row, and for allowing the Live Well Coalition to be part of it.
