Our Autism story of the week is an 18-year old, Christian Walker, who has an incredible gift for music, who was accepted into 5 colleges.

Christian, who has already accomplished so much, serves as the drum major for his school’s marching band. “When Christian was younger,” his mother Terra says, “Doctors said he would never go to a regular school, that I should be prepared to institutionalize him one day.”

He is set to join Clemson's Spectrum Program, specifically designed for students diagnosed with autism and pursue a performing arts major with a focus in piano.

Christian is only one of the many inspirations to the neurodiverse community!

Christian Walker has already accomplished so much, and later this year, he'll head off to college—to pursue his love of music.

Improving social skills are one of the main areas of focus for our highly trained ABAs. Here are some things to keep in mind when practicing social communication at home:

⭐ Reinforce Positive Behavior
⭐ Provide Structured Social Interactions
⭐ Model and Practice Desired Behaviors
⭐ Use Visual Aids
⭐ Set the Environment for Success

Change does not happen overnight. So constant repetition is essential for seeing improvement in communication.

If you want to learn more on how to improve your child’s social skills, message us directly to get in contact with an ABA professional!

During the pandemic, mask mandates were a concern with social communication between kids in school, especially kids with autism.

With mouths covering their main communicator, there was a barrier to how kids typically learn how to speak to each other. But over time, one study from the University of Miami has shown similar amounts of talking, vocabulary development, language growth, and language development occurred with or without masks.

Our brains are resilient. And our kids are resilient. They found ways to communicate more and more to get their meaning across because of the visual barrier over their mouths.

Yet, there are no long-term effects known on how masks in the classroom have affected speech and social skills, what’s true is how well kids are able to adapt to any situation.

Follow along if you want to continue learning more as we continue to tackle different topics in the autism community!

Scientists say that for most children, masks in school aren't a major obstacle to learning or socializing. Students in classrooms find other ways to connect.

Why are Evidence-Based practices effective with people with Autism?

Evidence based practices are executed as a way of ensuring individuals with autism spectrum disorder are receiving services that will help improve their quality of life.

Programs can be carefully selected and focus on specific educational and life skills goals, as well as identifying and building on the strengths of the individual. Programs like:

+ Differential Intervention
+ Exercise & Movement Intervention
+ Social Skills Training

These programs are just some of the ways the Center for Autism and Nurturing are expanding autism therapy. If you want to learn more about evidenced-based practices we use, message us directly!
