A child is never too young to advocate for themselves. Even infants can express their wants and needs without using words. For example, when an infant doesn't want to go to certain people. Fostering and respecting children's self-advocacy at a young age can help build a foundation for self-advocacy as their grow older.

Does your young child have significant difficulty expressing their wants and needs with words? Reach out to Indigo Therapy Center, or your local speech-language pathologist, for a consultation.

A child typically says their first word at around 12-18 months old. A first word is intentional, purposeful, and consistent. The first word may be clear (e.g., "dog") or approximated (e.g., "dah") to refer to a specific concept (e.g., dog).

Are you concerned that your child hasn't said their first word? Contact Indigo Therapy Center, or your local speech-language pathologist, for a consultation.

Tantrums can be scary and overwhelming for both the adult and the child. Here are some tips to navigate them:

1) Keep calm and don't yell. It's important to maintain a calm atmosphere because children feed off of your energy.

2) Distract your child. Young children have short attention spans. Simply redirecting them to a new activity or object can help reorient themselves.

3) If in public, move to a different location. A calm, safe space is needed to help your child calm down. More eyes on the child may also overwhelm them (and yourself!)

4) Communicate at their level. Speak in words or sentences that your child will understand.

Tantrums can be rough with little ones, but these are some things you can do to avoid them:

1. Give control over little things. There are many things a child can't control in their life, especially at a young age. Simple opportunities can make a big difference (e.g., 'Do you want the red cup, or blue cup) even if they seem small to you 😉

2. Give positive attention. Oftentimes parents reprimand for negative behavior so much that they forget to point out the positive. Positive reinforcement can make the child aware of their positive behavior and become more motivated to maintain it.

3. Provide information in advance. Humans can get overwhelmed if they don't know what's going. Giving a child a heads up can mentally prepare them for what's ahead. (e.g., "We're leaving the playground in 5 minutes so we can go home for dinner.")

4. Know your child's limits. All children respond to situations differently. Prepare yourself for situations that are more or least likely to cause a tantrum.

Stayed turned for another post about what to do DURING a tantrum.

Navigating developmental norms can be confusing, especially when differentiating milestones and averages.

Milestones are what 90% of children are able to do at a certain age. Averages are what 50% of children are able to do at a certain age.

If your child is not meeting some basic milestones, it is important to let your provider know to figure out what next steps may be necessary.

"Speech therapy" is a simplified term to refer to services provided by a speech-language pathologist. So, what is the difference between speech and language?

Speech is how we say sounds and words. Speech includes articulation, voice, and fluency.

Language refers to the words we use and how we use them to share ideas and get what we want. Language includes understanding, producing, and combining words to create meaning.

If you are concerned about your or a loved one's speech and language production then reach out to Indigo Therapy Center for a virtual consultation. We can help provide some information and clarity.
