Ignoring Zone 2 exercise and under-treating certain risk factors can leave you with a reduced Anaerobic Threshold (AT) and a reduced aerobic base - even if you have a good Peak VO2.

More time in Zone 2 will increase the AT by improving endothelial function and collateral circulation and by lowering blood pressure and lipids.

This will also provide a boost to the aerobic base and bump up a stagnant Peak VO2!

Most heart attacks occur before a treadmill stress test can detect any abnormalities. On the other hand, a CPET has the capability to flag the earliest stages of heart disease - sometimes decades before a heart attack is to occur.

Early detection allows for earlier treatment and hashtag of cardiovascular events.

Treadmill stress tests are a thing of the past - prevention is the way forward!

What's the point of having patients do a TMST if it only detects issues later on the heart disease progression spectrum?

Instead of waiting for electrical ischemia, a CPET looks for mechanical dysfunction - which appears decades before symptoms occur (if they even appear at all before an event).

Earlier detection allows for earlier treatment. Earlier treatment means money and lives saved.

The American Heart Association published a 48 page scientific statement detailing the use of measured cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in clinical settings.

The main takeaway? "An individual's CRF level was a stronger predictor of mortality than established risk factors such as , , , and ."

The gold-standard for measuring CRF? Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing.

Not only is a Met-Test CPET more detailed, accurate, and versatile than a treadmill stress test, it can also catch heart disease at its earliest stage.

That means earlier and more personalized management.

That means more time, money, and lives saved.

Women have been traditionally under-served by current standards for diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

This is partly due to the fact that women have higher rates of small-vessel, or microvascular, disease that is not identified with traditional imaging modalities.

When heart disease is under-diagnosed, it is under-treated resulting in missed opportunities to improve care before heart attacks, heart failure and strokes.

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a diagnostic test which can diagnose microvascular disease and should be part of every woman's standard evaluation.

Have you ever asked a patient how often they exercise and they respond by discussing their levels of physical activity?

While exercise and physical activity are frequently used as interchangeable terms, they technically describe two different things.

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure, but many aren't even aware. Dubbed a 'silent killer,' hypertension usually has no symptoms, yet it significantly increases the risk of multiple health threats.

In this study, the authors explain:

◾ There was a greater (but not significant) decrease seen in the
aerobic continuous and aerobic + strength group.

◾ The aerobic continuous and HIIT group saw a more sustained
decrease in BP.

◾ Among the trained individuals, a significant decrease in BP was
only seen in the HIIT group.

"The 3rd CPET demonstrates clear cardiac dysfunction that may be [...] related to waning hormonal support from menopause."

🔔 Published Case Study 🔔

Low levels of estrogen after menopause increase the risk of developing heart disease in the smaller blood vessels.

Thankfully, cardiopulmonary exercise testing detects the earliest stages of microvascular dysfunction, allowing the appropriate treatments to begin at the earliest time.
