Harmony Nutrition founder, Abby Jellinek–Johnson was born and raised in Marietta Georgia and now resides very close to where she grew up with her husband and three kids. Abby started her career in the health and fitness field as a certified personal trainer, graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Kinesiology in 2005. Her passion for health and wellness led her to pursue a career as a dietitian completing her Master’s Degree in Dietetics in 2014 from Georgia State University. Abby spent two years working for Children’s Health Care of Atlanta at a specialty clinic called the Aerodigestive clinic where she had the opportunity to work with children with digestive and pulmonary conditions. Abby went on to continue her work with children by working with the Center for Rare Neurological Diseases where she continues to contribute to nutrition research on rare neurological conditions including Rett Syndrome, GLUT 1 deficiency, and Pitt Hopkins Syndrome. With her combined experience in sports and personal training, pediatrics, GI, and weight loss Abby recognized a need for healthcare professionals that would take the time to listen to them and provide individualized nutrition in a different way. She envisioned a place where people could get individualized care using evidence–based nutrition from top notch dietitians. In 2018, Harmony Nutrition was born. As the Harmony team grew, Abby looked for dietitians who wanted to go the extra mile for patients by making sure patients fully understood their health condition. Abby built a strong team of registered dietitians who demonstrated the ability to tailor their teaching approach to meet the patient where they are. And that is how Harmony Nutrition was born.

Polyphenols are natural chemicals found in plants that help feed gut microbes. They have antioxidant properties, meaning they can reduce damage caused by UV rays from sun exposure and cancer-causing free radicals from pollutants. They also have anti-inflammatory effects and can help reduce intestinal permeability and help heal the lining of the gut. Studies suggest that a diet high in polyphenols can reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Some foods high in polyphenols include dark chocolate, blueberries, pomegranate, açaí berries, blood oranges, and green tea. Ask our dietitians how you can support your gut health through diet!

Many people suffer from food intolerances and sensitvities. Not to be confused with allergic reactions which are based on an overreaction of the immune system. Food intolerances are a digestive issues when the body has trouble processing certain foods resulting in bloating, gas, or diarrhea. Food sensitivties can include digestive issues as well as a broader range including skin reactions, joint pain, headaches, etc.
An elimination diet seeks to identify trigger foods by eliminating certain food groups for a period of time, then reintroducing them one by one during a challenge period. During this time it’s beneficial to keep a food journal, including any physical symptoms experienced throughout the day, especially since symptoms may not occur immediately after eating. While this process takes some time, it is a great tool for identifying what foods to avoid to relive symptoms and which ones you can still enjoy. A registered dietitian can help determine if the elimination diet is the right protocol for you and guide you through the process.

Selenium is an essential mineral necessary for many bodily functions including DNA synthesis, fertility, and thyroid health. It also protects your body from cancer-causing free radicals and oxidative stress. Certain conditions such as hypothyroidism and pregnancy can increase your need for selenium. Vegans and vegetarians may also have lower selenium intake, as some of the best sources are meat and animal products such as eggs, fish, poultry and beef. Whole grains like brown rice and fortified grains also provide selenium. Did you know the best source of selenium is Brazil nuts: just 1-2 a day meets the recommended intake for adults. A dietitian can help you determine whether selenium supplementation is necessary and how to achieve adequate intake through a balanced diet.

Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid byproduct that is produced from the digestion and fermentation of dietary fiber. It can help heal the mucosal lining of the intestines, reduce inflammation and gut permeability (also known as leaky gut). Recent studies show potential links to brain health, cardiovascular health, and improved insulin sensitivity. Prebiotic fibers such as nuts, whole grains, green bananas and potatoes, fermented foods (kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut) and full fat diary products (butter and ghee) all help or supply the production of butyrate.

Being on a gluten-free diet doesn’t mean you have to miss out on dining out with friends and family. Here are a few things you can do to reduce your risk of exposure at restaurants:
1. Ask for a gluten-free menu or allergen guide.
2. Have your server ask the kitchen directly.
3. Be aware of unsuspected foods that could contain gluten: gravies, sauces and condiments, batter, fillers in sausage and deli meat, malt vinegar, imitation crab, soy sauce, etc.
4. Ask for substitutions, i.e. plain rice, lettuce wraps or bowls for sandwiches and burritos, corn tortillas, etc.
5. For those with higher sensitivities, ask how the kitchen prevents cross-contamination

Whether it's for Celiac Disease or a gluten-sensitivity, a gluten-free diet can be challenging, especially with the more hidden sources of gluten. Gluten is found in grains like wheat, barely and rye, but these ingredients are used in many other products besides baked goods and pasta. Read ingredient lists carefully. Some other food items that may contain gluten are sauces and condiments, gravies and dressings, malt products (milkshakes, beer, and even some corn and rice cereal brands), vegan products, meat alternatives, deli meats and cheeses. Look for certified gluten free labels when possible, and look for “may contain wheat” in case of cross contamination.

Vitamin D plays an essential role in regulating our immune system, and thus may help with the management of autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Vitamin D can help reduce inflammation and help heal the lining of the gut, as a damaged gut lining is often a precursor to many food sensitivies and diseases. Hypothyroid patients often have low serum levels of Vitamin D, so it’s important to have lab work done to see if supplements are needed. Ways to increase vitamin D naturally include eating foods rich in vitamin D such as fatty fish, dairy and eggs. The body also makes it’s own vitamin D using sunlight: 15 minutes of sun exposure to the wrists and ankles is enough to meet daily needs depending on age and skin color.

Driven by personal struggles with gut health, hormonal imbalances, and the mental toll of perfectionism, she pursued a master’s degree in nutrition, along with certifications in emotional intelligence and trauma-informed somatic practices. Today, she supports patients through the natural phases of life, focusing on hormone balance, digestive health, and emotional well-being. Her work is rooted in the belief that true health is a harmony of nourishment—mental, physical, and emotional—and she is honored to walk alongside others on their journey to wholeness.
