Harmony Nutrition founder, Abby Jellinek–Johnson was born and raised in Marietta Georgia and now resides very close to where she grew up with her husband and three kids. Abby started her career in the health and fitness field as a certified personal trainer, graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Kinesiology in 2005. Her passion for health and wellness led her to pursue a career as a dietitian completing her Master’s Degree in Dietetics in 2014 from Georgia State University. Abby spent two years working for Children’s Health Care of Atlanta at a specialty clinic called the Aerodigestive clinic where she had the opportunity to work with children with digestive and pulmonary conditions. Abby went on to continue her work with children by working with the Center for Rare Neurological Diseases where she continues to contribute to nutrition research on rare neurological conditions including Rett Syndrome, GLUT 1 deficiency, and Pitt Hopkins Syndrome. With her combined experience in sports and personal training, pediatrics, GI, and weight loss Abby recognized a need for healthcare professionals that would take the time to listen to them and provide individualized nutrition in a different way. She envisioned a place where people could get individualized care using evidence–based nutrition from top notch dietitians. In 2018, Harmony Nutrition was born. As the Harmony team grew, Abby looked for dietitians who wanted to go the extra mile for patients by making sure patients fully understood their health condition. Abby built a strong team of registered dietitians who demonstrated the ability to tailor their teaching approach to meet the patient where they are. And that is how Harmony Nutrition was born.

Vitamin D plays an essential role in regulating our immune system, and thus may help with the management of autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Vitamin D can help reduce inflammation and help heal the lining of the gut, as a damaged gut lining is often a precursor to many food sensitivies and diseases. Hypothyroid patients often have low serum levels of Vitamin D, so it’s important to have lab work done to see if supplements are needed. Ways to increase vitamin D naturally include eating foods rich in vitamin D such as fatty fish, dairy and eggs. The body also makes it’s own vitamin D using sunlight: 15 minutes of sun exposure to the wrists and ankles is enough to meet daily needs depending on age and skin color.

Driven by personal struggles with gut health, hormonal imbalances, and the mental toll of perfectionism, she pursued a master’s degree in nutrition, along with certifications in emotional intelligence and trauma-informed somatic practices. These experiences have shaped her integrative approach, emphasizing the powerful connection between the mind, body, and emotions.

Today, she supports patients through the natural phases of life, focusing on hormone balance, digestive health, and emotional well-being. Her work is rooted in the belief that true health is a harmony of nourishment—mental, physical, and emotional—and she is honored to walk alongside others on their journey to wholeness.

Excessive sugar intake can lead to health issues like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart ❤️ disease, among many others. Sometimes our intake can be higher than we think even when avoiding sweets. Sugar is hidden in many products like granola bars, flavored yogurt, flavored instant oatmeal, salad dressings, cereals, pasta sauce, condiments, packaged fruit, specialty coffee drinks, and flavored beverages. You can increase your awareness of your sugar intake by peeking at the labels before you buy these products. Some ways to reduce your intake include choosing unsweetened variations of foods like yogurt and oatmeal and adding your own toppings, making your own dressings with oil and vinegar or lemon 🍋 juice, choosing unsweetened beverages and limiting how much sweetener you add yourself or choosing zero-sugar variations, and choosing fresh or frozen fruits.

Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables provides you with nutritious fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and it can support healthy weight management and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The USDA recommends at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables per day, and encourages everyone to fill half of their plate with them for each meal. Some ways to incorporate more fruits and vegetables include eating your fruit and vegetables portions first, include at least one serving for each meal and snack every day, cut up fruits and vegetables and have them snack ready. Consider trying a new fruit or vegetable each week, and eat the fruits and vegetables that you actually like!

Have you considered the benefits of eating seasonally? When you eat food that is in season you support local farms who grow their food according to the weather patterns in your area. Food that is in season has been harvested when it is naturally ripe which makes it fresher and more nutrient dense; foods grown out of season usually have to be artificially ripened and harvested early to be able to survive a long transit across the globe. Foods harvested in season are typically more cost effective because these foods can grow more abundantly in their proper soil quality, climate and sun exposure. Some foods that are in season in Georgia this summer include black eyed peas, blackberries , asparagus , arugula 🥗 , blueberries 🫐 , broccoli 🥦 , collard greens 🥬 , corn 🌽 , mint, okra, peaches 🍑 , radishes, shallots 🧅 , and strawberries 🍓 , plus many more!

Many people limit sodium for health concerns like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease. Some tips to limit sodium include reducing processed foods and choosing more fresh foods, seasoning with lemon, herbs and other spices like pepper or garlic, make slow changes to let your taste buds adjust to new flavors. Make an effort to eat more meals at home, read labels and choose lower sodium options. Decreasing portion sizes of foods that are higher in sodium and paying attention to condiments and dressings that can have very high amounts of sodium will help limit addtional sodium intake.
