Retirement Reality
I thought retirement meant peace and quiet,
Long lazy days with no need for a diet.
Sunrises soft, and evenings slow,
With birdsong and breezes in a gentle flow.
I dreamed of gardens, books, and tea,
And time unfolding just for me.
But now surprise! I’ve come to see,
It’s not quite how I thought it’d be.
For now I live with my spouse all day,
From dawn till dusk, come work or play.
We talk, we bicker, laugh and sigh,
Sometimes I want to scream or cry!
She folds the towels the wrong way ‘round,
He hums too loud it’s a constant sound.
My quiet corners? They’ve been claimed.
My solo strolls? Now double-named.
Still, in the chaos, there’s love so true,
In every “What now?” and “Me or you?
Though silence is rare, and peace is brief,
There’s joy in sharing every leaf.
So here’s to love that doesn’t rest
Even when it puts patience to the test.
Retirement’s not the dream I drew...
But life is sweeter shared with you.
