Pilates based PT

Pilates is a mind-body exercise first created by Joseph Pilates to rehabilitate internees during WWI. Pilates places an emphasis on posture, core, control, and breathing. Proper breathing technique is essential to the power and control of movement. Pilates can be performed by matwork or utilizing a variety of specialized equipment, and exercises are easily modified to range from beginning to advanced. The result is a production of long lean muscles, an evenly toned and conditioned body, and superior body awareness. With it's focus on core stability and movement efficiency, Pilates has become a natural and productive pairing with physical therapy. Pilates based physical therapy is a highly effective strategy utilizing the principles of Pilates combined with therapeutic treatment to heal the body, reduce pain, and restore function. The use of Pilates equipment allows the muscles and joints to move smoothly and continuously throughout their full range of motion, reaching maximal potential and working in diagonals verse single planes of movement. Treatment is not restricted to a single body area. Alternatively, treatment focuses on the whole body with postural analysis of symmetry and alignment. Core stabilization and effective breathing are an integral part of each session. Clemons physical therapy offers a private and individual experience with treatment sessions performed on a one-on-one basis (one client with one therapist). Everyone is unique, therefore sessions are tailored toward individual needs. Clients feel more connected to their care, in control of their health, and empowered in decision making. Sessions may include postural analysis of symmetry and alignment, core stabilization and effective breathing, dry needling, manual therapy with soft tissue massage and joint mobilization, ultrasound therapy, Kinesiotaping, and Red Cord suspension training.

A special note for those with neurologic conditions: These populations are held in the highest regard and are welcomed. Pilates equipment is wonderfully adaptable with the ability to offer low impact, spring loaded, anti-gravity exercises to improve strength and balance. The emphasis on breathing helps to expand lung capacity and elevate energy. Body work on the Pilates reformer with tactile cuing from the therapist as needed provides smooth, coordinated, and large amplitude movement with consistent biofeedback. It has been a privilege being able to work with those with conditions varying from Parkinson's Disease to paralysis.

ABOUT YOUR THERAPIST

I would like to offer a little information about myself. I have always had a fascination with science and biology including the physiology of movement. I danced from age 4 until about 26 and suffered from injury, which led me to physical therapy and eventually into Pilates.
