The eloquent and authentic words of Brene Brown once again strikes a chord. Read below as she courageously shares the struggle of a challenging season:

I thought it was a break but it was more of a breaking. Not necessarily breaking down, but NOT not down. Maybe open.

It's been a tough season, but an important one. I shared my thoughts in a post on the new website, where you'll also find our latest project — The ABK Edit. I think you're going to love the stories.

From my wild heart to yours. ❤️

This is just beautiful.

the places in our heart
where the world took bites
out of us

may never fully heal
and will likely become open spaces

be careful to not fill them
with just anything or anyone

your wounds aren’t supposed
to become attics for you to hoard
unnecessary junk

these holes in our hearts
are holy sites

and we should treat
them as such

so when visiting your old wounds
make sure to take your shoes off
and turn off your cellphone

sit by candlelight
and watch how the shadows
tell the story how brave you are

~ to survive

It’s almost here, and if you are anything like me there may be a few items on the checklist. It’s around this time of the season, as I settle in at night, I find myself checking off the “not done” list a little quicker than the “done”. An alternative (and much more calming approach) is to think of all you actually did accomplish during the day. Likely, you will see it is more than you realized. I find when I take this approach my heart rate and worry slow down, settling my nervous system, which leads to a much better night sleep. Give it a try. 💤

Gabor Mate is an incredibly wise and compassionate clinician who has influenced me for many years. As a Jewish man he speaks to what is happening in a way that is both thought provoking and honorable- to both sides. It is worth a listen.

Dr. Gabor Maté shares his reflections on Israel/Palestine including recent tragic events on and following October 7th, 2023. This conversation was recorded o...

Note to Self 🌻

Reading a new favorite on the inescapable topic of grief:

"Grief is not a problem to be solved, not a condition to be medicated, but a deep encounter with an essential experience of being human. Grief becomes problematic when the conditions needed to help us work with grief are absent. For example, when we are forced to carry our sorrow in isolation, or when the time needed to fully metabolize the nutrients of a particular loss is denied, and we are pressured to return to "normal" too soon. We are told to "get on with it" and "get over it". The lack of courtesy and compassion surrounding grief is astonishing, reflecting an underlying fear and mistrust of this basic human experience. We must find the courage once again, to walk its wild edge."

Beginning again works any day!

Beginning again works any day!

Midday Meditation: “Always, we begin again.” – St. Benedict

In the middle of a random Tuesday, let’s begin again. Let what has been go. Let yourself pick up *this* moment, and be present to it as a new beginning.

Take a breath, and begin to breathe.

Open your eyes and begin to see.

Begin a practice. Begin to grieve, or to forgive, or to love some part of yourself that has been neglected. Begin to trust, or doubt, or hope—even if you’ve begun it a hundred times before.

What are *you* being invited to begin today? Take a few deep breaths, and just notice the invitations of your own body, your soul, the Spirit in you. What do you find yourself *wanting* to begin, in this moment (and what are the things you tell yourself about whether that is possible right now? What if more is possible in this moment’s new beginning than you ever imagined?)?

Begin.

Again.

And again.

(And again.)

A timely reminder after all the busy of the holidays…💗

A timely reminder after all the busy of the holidays…💗

For many, January is a hard, cold month…

When everyone is setting new goals, laying down righteous ground rules and striving to become a better version of themselves, some of us are fighting to find ourselves each day...

You see, December is a month of giving, and some of us, come January, are completely and utterly spent.

A month of remembering everyone, and remembering absolutely everything.

A month of including everyone and of reaching out to each and every person we have ever known.

A month of reaching breaking point every day trying to have fun, to be the ultimate hostess, to be the perfect guest.

A month of stretching ourselves financially, emotionally and of letting our boundaries be breached by many... in the spirit of the season.

And then January hits and bam... before we can even begin the arduous task of clearing away the festivities, we are expected to jump on the ‘new year, new you’ bandwagon and transform ourselves entirely.

For some of us this is just too much.

January is the darkest and most depressing month of the year and for many sensitive souls, the barrage of ‘advice’ on how we ‘should’ be living, is just too much.

So perhaps this is a safe place to say that maybe it’s okay to take a week or two to recover and to just be kind to ourselves before demanding better.

And for those of us who really do fall low in the darkest month of the year. For those of us who have given too much and to whom the future looks bleak - perhaps this is the right place to say - you are absolutely fine the way you are. Just stay.

Take some time to breathe.

Take some time to not think about anything much at all except breathing in and breathing out.

Take some time to build back up, not tear your yourself down.

For many, this month is a mountain that looks unclimbable.

Be kind, my friends. Always.
