"You don't know what you don't know."
It is always a good idea to consult with a pelvic health physical therapist during pregnancy and after delivery to screen for potential problems and discuss healthy habits and appropriate exercise. Don't wait until something seems "off."
Be proactive in your health and wellness during this wonderful season of life!
(And remember to always make sure your "therapist" is a licensed PT! Simply ask for their PT license number).

True or False: "kegel" exercises are always appropriate for treatment of urinary leakage (aka Urinary Incontinence).

FALSE!!

Why? Because sometimes the muscles of the pelvic floor (the ones involved in performing "kegels") are carrying too much tension. In this case, attempting to contract the pelvic floor muscles is not going to help!

The extra tension in the pelvic floor muscles must first be addressed before moving on to strengthening. This requires entirely different treatments/activities that focus on retraining the muscles to relax (I know this seems counterintuitive... but it's a bit complicated!).

There is much more to urinary dysfunction than simple weakness of the pelvic floor muscles. This is why many folks try performing kegel exercises for their urinary leakage, but their leaking persists.

See a pelvic health physical therapist to learn more about the why and how of appropriate interventions for urinary incontinence.
(And don't forget to ask for their PT license number before making an appointment to be sure you are seeing a physical therapist!)

A lovely gift from a sweet patient today🥰. Pelvic pain is mostly an "invisible" condition - it is not obvious to others and is typically not talked about, even amongst friends and family. By the time patients seek help from a pelvic PT, they often have been struggling for months or years. I am extremely grateful that this specialty in physical therapy found me many years and lots of patients ago! ❤

When first diagnosed with interstitial cystitis you may feel alone. Don’t — 4 to 12 million may have IC. Just like solving a puzzle, understanding this diagnosis requires patience, research, and the support of loved ones. Check out our Newly Diagnosed Toolkit. This toolkit will help guide you through what to do after you are diagnosed.

We are extremely fortunate to have a pain specialist who recently relocated to the Atlanta area, joining the relative few of us who work in the area of pelvic pain and dysfunction! Dr. John Vogel offers many interventions for pain relief that are considered standard/traditional. AND, he has created non-traditional approaches during his many years of experience working with complex pain conditions. His focus is on the individual, and he is a strong believer in the importance of multidisciplinary care. Please take a look and share his information:

In October, my colleagues and I celebrate our profession of Physical Therapy with much gratitude for our mentors along the way, our places of work, and especially our patients! I am extremely grateful to have fallen into this career path many years ago!

So many of our patients tell us that they were anxious about making their first appointment for pelvic PT, but they eventually made the call because nothing was helping their condition(s).
Then after a few visits, they tell us that they wish they had sought our services much sooner, because it changed their lives for the better.

Sometimes we must reach outside of our comfort zone to improve our lives...

For pelvic pain or bowel, bladder, and sexual dysfunctions, seek the help of a licensed physical therapist who specializes in pelvic health!
