Here is to Altadena and Pasadena. A message from Tyra Banks
The Westside of Los Angeles, with its attention and its fame, often steals the spotlight. But my heart is also with Altadena and Pasadena – communities rich with history and deeply tied to my family.
My Mama Carolyn speaks so lovingly about her childhood in Pasadena and Altadena, painting vivid pictures of life there. She talks about the large, magnificent trees that line the streets, the warmth of the neighborhoods, and the joy of simpler times.
Even as recently as months ago, we’d feel the pull to reconnect with her roots. On weekends, we’d drive from the west side of LA to Pasadena – to experience its beauty and Mama’s past in the present. We’d have a yummy brunch at , explore our fave local bookstore , stroll under gargantuan trees, and almost yearly visit the to tour the dreamy homes. Two of those places did not exist when she was a child, but the earth on which they stand did. So it was always such a meaningful way to stay connected to her past while creating new moments together.
Right now, I’m thinking of all the people across Altadena, Pasadena, and beyond who are suffering and facing profound loss. In regards to possessions, to attempt to make the one experiencing loss feel better, people often say, “Oh, it’s just stuff…just things…” but we know these “things” hold deep memories, intense love, and a tangible connection to who we are.
We will rebuild. We will recover. But right now, we’re simply getting through—moment by moment.
From my family to yours, we send love, strength, and a reminder: Your stories, your losses, and your resilience are as vital and worthy as those on LA’s Westside.
💛Tyra and Mama Carolyn
