Hello Tidy Thyme Tribe and welcome to our humble little kitchen. π "Mi casa, es su casa!"
You are looking at the extent of our cabinet and counter space. It gets tight in the midst of meal prep but we've made it work for us.
I don't know about you but clutter in a kitchen makes me anxious and a small kitchen feels cluttered FAST! If I had my druthers there wouldn't be a single object on my counters. I'm a messy cook and I like to be able to spread out when I'm preparing my meals.
Here are a few simple things we've done to make down-sizing from a 2,000 sq/ft home to a 600 sq/ft cottage work for us in the kitchen:
1. I'm not drinking cofee these days but Mark uses a small European stove top coffee maker in place of a counter top appliance.
2. We also don't have a toaster, microwave, rice cooker, slow cooker or any of those other small appliances and use our stovetop and oven for all of those purposes.
3.We have 2 bowls, 4 plates, 8 mugs (that we hang), 2 pans... you get the idea. In our old house we had an entire cabinet full of mugs another full of plates etc.
4. In place of where a microwave would be we put up some open shelves for our spices and bulk items like quinoa, flour, loose teas, dried fruit etc. which we store in old mason jars to feed my vintage soul.
5. I stopped buying that cool new contraption, that beautiful linen, that thing that promises to make my life easier but that I know will eventually just take up space.
6. Inevitably "stuff" creeps in and the chaos of life happens and so I purge and do a reorganizing about once every couple months.
I'd love to hear what space saving tips and tricks you have to share in the comments below π
