Using IUDs for Long-Term Birth Control

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a form of long-acting, irreversible birth control that use various chemicals and compounds to prevent s***m from reaching an egg. They come in two varieties: copper and hormonal.

Copper IUDs release trace amounts of their namesake metal that act as a s***micide, while hormonal IUDs change your reproductive body chemistry to make it near impossible for s***m to reach an egg. A gynecologist can help you determine which option is best for you.

You may already know that hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a woman's uterus, but when would such a dramatic operation be necessary? As you might expect, the removal of a uterus renders a woman permanently infertile, but it could also significantly improve (and even save) her life.

A gynecologist may recommend a hysterectomy if the patient has been struggling with the symptoms of conditions like in endometriosis, adenomyosis, abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding, uterine fibroids, or cancer of the ovaries, cervix, or uterus.

Researchers are finding that many women are not getting the proper nutrition they need during menopause. For example, as a woman's risk of osteoporosis increases during menopause, creating a greater need for nutrients like vitamin D and calcium.

Women also need to manage their cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and blood pressure during menopause — the addition of Omega-3 and potassium can help here. As metabolism slows, foods with folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6 become more critical, as well.
