🏊‍♀️ Breastfeeding in the Pool: What to Know
âś… Is It Safe?
Yes, you can breastfeed in a pool. Breastmilk remains safe even if you’re in chlorinated or saltwater. The water won’t harm your baby, and breastfeeding offers comfort and hydration, especially in warm weather. 💧
đź’ˇ Tips for Breastfeeding in the Pool
1. Choose the Right Spot
Find a calm, quiet area of the pool or a shallow area where you feel stable and supported.
2. Wear the Right Swimwear
Choose a swimsuit or bikini with easy access for nursing (like a wrap top, deep V-neck, or even a zip up rashguard like mine!).
3. Watch for Slippery Skin
Water can make you and baby slippery, so hold them securely and stay aware of your grip.
Sit on a pool step or edge if you don’t feel steady holding baby in the water (or if you simply want to relax and be as comfortable as possible.)
4. Rinse After Exiting the Pool
Chlorine or saltwater can dry out or irritate baby’s skin. Rinse both of you off after leaving the pool.
5. Keep yourself hydrated while in the pool—especially if you’re breastfeeding! 💧
You might spot my 1/2 gallon stainless steel jug in the background—yep, it’s full of ice water. 🧊 It’s easy for parents to get sidetracked and end up spending way longer in the pool than planned, especially with older kiddos who like to swim. So don’t forget to drink up while you’re splashing around!
🚼 Safety Notes
Don’t breastfeed while floating or in deep water where balance is a concern.
Always keep your baby’s head fully supported and completely out of the water.
Never feed in a hot tub—water temperature is typically not safe for infants.
đź’¬ Comfort & Social Awareness
Breastfeeding is a legal right in many places, even in public spaces like pools.
If you’re concerned about modesty, bring a towel or cover-up for extra discretion.
