Funeral & Cremation Service was honored by the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) with the Pursuit of Excellence Award in 2020. This prestigious award represents just how special the funeral home is in serving each family that walks in the door. For over a century, the funeral planning team has served people from all walks of life, making everyone feel at home and welcome. As a result, your end-of-life ceremony can look any way you want it to when you have Finch & Finch, Inc. Funeral & Cremation Service on your side. Maggie, the Sheepadoodle, is the grief therapy dog on staff that can attend your funerals, visitations, receptions, and other events upon request. She offers a positive distraction from the somber events, charming children and adults alike. Funeral & Cremation Service is a full service funeral home that can include visitations before the funeral services and graveside ceremonies after at the burial location. If you would like to customize the weekend by minimizing or expanding the events, you can do so. For example, some families want to gather for a reception with food and chit-chat after the services. Other families choose an immediate burial with a small graveside ceremony and no funeral service at all. Cremation services can be straightforward, with direct cremation as a standalone procedure. Or you can pair cremation with a memorial ceremony to provide a public forum for family and friends to gather and pay their last respects. Live celebrations are more modern and lighthearted. Throw a party for the deceased at an outdoor venue with music and dancing. Do not forget that veteran services and military honors can be implemented into any service with all the traditions that come with them. Pre-planning funeral services are offered before a death occurs. Then you can have a clear mind in choosing monuments, cremation jewelry, permanent memorialization, and green burial options. Funeral & Cremation Service loves to serve families from Altavista, Lynch Station, Hurt, Gretna, Evington, Gladys, Rustburg, Smith Mountain Lake (Exclude Franklin county), Lynchburg, and Forest. Pet cremation and burial options are also popular services. Choose pet urns and pet caskets to memorialize your furry friend. In addition, ship-in and ship-out services are also available. Funeral & Cremation Service is located at 809 Main St Altavista, VA 24517. Be sure to call (434) 369-5621 to start planning.

Our Story

First in Service for Five Generations In 1905, John T. Finch founded what was to become the oldest business in the area. In Grit, Virginia, he hung out his shingle: “John T. Finch, Funeral Director.” A few years later, he relocated the company to Altavista, and in 1931 his son-in-law, Hubert J. Finch, became an equal partner. Hubert and his wife Virginia established the present-day funeral home in 1951, brought their son Bob into the business in 1954, and continued to remodel and expand the facility to better serve the families of the area. Bob’s son, Robert L. (Rob) Finch, Jr., is now President of the funeral home, and represents the fourth generation of the family to serve the community. After he joined the firm, the Finch family purchased the W.N. Flynn Funeral Home in Gladys, Virginia then remodeled and expanded it to provide more convenience for visiting families. In 2010 Rob’s son, Robert L. (Trey) Finch, III joined the firm to represent the fifth generation of the Finch family.
