There are so many people and places claiming to practice functional medicine these days that can make it difficult to even truly understand what functional medicine should look like. Here's some things that we consider to be 'red flags' when it comes to functional medicine clinics or natural health clinics:
-generic treatment protocols
-standard lab panels not specific to you
-blindly throwing supplements at you
-changing your supplement regimen weekly
-telling you to stop your medications without proper assessment or medical oversight
-not taking a detailed health history
-not having a physical exam
-not asking about or addressing lifestyle or diet concerns
-not considering mental wellbeing
-shaming you for your choices or your struggles with compliance
-not willing to refer you to someone else or recommend a therapy that may help you
-not considering your budget or not transparent with pricing
-claiming to be an expert in everything or able to cure everything

Be cautious and do your research before deciding where you want to receive care!

GGT or gamma-glutamyl transferase is an enzyme found throughout the body, but mostly in the liver. High levels of GGT can be a sign of liver disease or bile duct damage. This patient presented was found to have a high level GGT and was NOT an alcoholic (in fact, does not drink alcohol at all!). With further testing and treatment, we were able to support his body and greatly improve his GGT along with improving other labs and symptoms.

Under a lot of stress? Stressful situations that lead to sleep deprivation, poor nutritional choices, lack of physical activity, and psychological stress can all increase the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. This study recommends that people with high stress occupations (especially first responders, firefighters, military, and police) should be using saunas to help combat these stressors and help prevent disease!

As functional medicine & similar 'root cause' modalities have taken off, there's been a slight fixation on complex or pathogen based root causes being at the root of all situations. And while this can be a very real thing in many cases (& we deal with these cases a lot!), there are a lot of times where I have found basic things being overlooked that are significant contributors to the patient's current health concerns.

Example 1 - female child with ongoing stomach aches. Has seen other providers and treated for h.pylori, parasites, yeast, and other gut dysbiosis. Upon assessment at our clinic, a thorough history revealed that the girl experienced stomach aches due to anxiety related to family dynamics. Treatment with neurofeedback resolved the stomach aches.
Example 2 - adult male has seen multiple conventional and alternative medical providers. Has been told he has chronic lyme disease and has not seen any improvement in symptoms with their treatments. Upon assessment at our clinic, a thorough history reveals he drinks 4-8 cans of Mountain Dew a day, doesn't "like the taste of water", and has insulin resistance. A terrain like this is likely contributing to the patient's inability to heal.

We can go on and on with stories like this. Find a provider that takes a good health history and can help you understand the greater complexities behind your health concerns. If you are looking for care, we'd love to help!

Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Not all supplements are safe to just take without proper monitoring. This patient had started herself on vitamin D for her depressive symptoms and continued taking it despite not having her levels checked. When we checked her levels, her vitamin D level was 180! While this may not happen in all cases, if you take vitamin D make sure you are working with a knowledgeable provider who can monitor levels to avoid toxicity, as well as one who understands all the complexities of vitamin D! (Because it really isn't as simple as it may look!). When in doubt, start with sunlight.

Treatment of osteoporosis is challenging. While medications exist, they are often poorly tolerated, contribute to other health concerns, and don't always have the best success rate. So, whether on medication or not, it is important to look at underlying contributing factors as well as alternative management strategies. This meta-analysis shows PEMF therapy significantly increased the bone mineral density of the femur and reduced the degree of pain compared to conventional medication approach. The conclusion states "PEMF intervention can be considered as a potentially effective complementary therapy for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis." Curious about PEMF? Talk with us or come give it a try with our advanced PEMF technology!

Getting 'sick' isn't fun.. I know that, you know that. No one likes being bogged down by illness for a few days, having coughing fits through the night, diarrhea that won't quit, or the fever that makes you uncomfortable and achy. But for just a second, hear me out. These symptoms are your body's way of expressing health. That fever? Your body is stimulating the body's defense mechanisms. That mucus? Your body is trapping toxins and pathogens and protecting the underlying membranes. That diarrhea or cough? Your body is attempting to expel those toxins and pathogens. A reactive immune system is extremely important. (Never getting sick & getting sick ALL.THE.TIME is not exactly what we are going for here, but I'll save that for a different post). We have a miraculous and very complex immune system! So in the midst of the fever, coughing episode, or blowing your nose, take a moment to thank your body for helping you recover.

Functional medicine... what even is it? Functional medicine is looking at symptoms or diagnoses through a different medical lens - instead of the conventional approach that says "here, take a pill for this," functional medicine is the process of understanding why you feel the way you do and addressing the causes so symptoms can be resolved or managed. In our approach, we take an in-depth medical history, complete a physical examination, and order labwork that is specific and relevant to YOUR needs to help obtain the data that we need to get you started on the right path.
