The Care Corner – Week 11 🧠 Dementia Education & Awareness – What Is Sundowning?

If you’re caring for a loved one with dementia, you may have noticed increased confusion, restlessness, or agitation in the late afternoon or evening. This is known as sundowning, a common symptom that affects many individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

While every person is different, sundowning can look like:
- Increased confusion or anxiety in the evening
Pacing, wandering, or trying to leave
Suspicion or fear, especially of caregivers
Repeating questions or becoming upset more easily
These behaviors can be challenging — but they’re not your fault, and you’re not alone.

Here are a few tips that may help reduce sundowning symptoms:
* Keep the environment calm and well-lit
Dimming light can increase confusion. Soft lighting and a quiet atmosphere can help.
* Stick to consistent routines
Predictable meal, activity, and rest times help reduce stress.
* Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and heavy meals late in the day
These can make restlessness worse.
* Encourage rest earlier in the day
Overtiredness can increase symptoms — short naps may help.
* Listen with empathy
Validate their feelings and offer gentle reassurance: “You’re safe. I’m right here.”
Sundowning can be frustrating — but with patience, support, and awareness, you can help create a more peaceful end to the day.
