Yesterday was 1 week post op for knee reconstruction surgery with Dr. Stephanie Grilli. (Love her and highly recommend her treatment- talented, skilled, passionate and educated with a healthy dose of empathy and compassion for her patients- you won't find a better combination for a surgeon) Yesterday was also my first day of PT at G3 Physical Therapy with Corey Gildea, PT and Kaitlyn, PTA.
I have found, through divine guidance I am certain, 2 healthcare providers that are so forward-thinking that they have John Barnes MFR principles sprinkled throughout their post surgical recovery requirements.
As we know, the reason John Barnes MFR works the way it does is that there is no force applied. The guiding principles are low load for long duration (5 minutes or longer), actively sitting against resistance/restrictions, waiting for the body to right itself, and continuing to follow the resistance barrier as it releases. Dr. Grilli's post-op notes have stretches done with low load for long duration at least 5 mins. Corey understands the patience required to apply appropriate pressure & support and wait for the body to make its move. He understands how vitally important it is for the body to feel safe during therapy so that it doesn't go into protection and fight against healthy changes. He also understands the importance of the neuro system releasing trauma and the physical tissues releasing stress chemicals. He's comfortable with my jaw shaking and tears coming to my eyes as my body processes out the stress and trauma of surgery, allowing my body to come back to a place of feeling safe in my knee so it can surge forward in healing. I am so grateful I was led to both of these providers.
So here I sit with my legs up the wall and my knee in extension for greater than 5 minutes while I breathe and allow my myofascial tissue to soften... and soften again... and again.
Counting the days until I am back in the office with all of you! Keep taking good care of yourselves! Marisa 💜
