Exercise Tip

Your metabolism can benefit from dumbbells and muscles. Weight lifting builds your muscles, which increases your metabolism. Each pound of muscle can burn up to 20 times more calories than each pound of fat, even when you are physically inactive. However, the body responds to a sedentary lifestyle by losing muscle. More than 60% of adults in the United States are inactive or irregularly active. About 25% of adults are inactive.

People go through life being weak, unfit, and begin to not feel well. Furthermore, after age 40, women lose ½ pound of muscle a year. During menopause, losses may be up to 1 pound a year if something is not done to put the muscle back on. The loss of muscle can also make it difficult to lose and maintain weight. Regular physical activity can improve your fitness and provide health benefits with even modest efforts. Try to include weight lifting in your daily routine so you can maintain and build your muscles, burn more calories, and shed the pounds away!

Exercise Tip

Are you exercising, yet you’re not happy with your weight loss results? Still not feeling stronger or full of more energy? Well, don’t give in just yet. Sometimes your exercise routine just needs a little boost. One way you can maximize your weight loss results through exercise is by pushing yourself a little bit more. When you do the same exercise for more than 3 months, you might get stuck. Does it feel easy to walk or run on the treadmill? Your body’s metabolism may have adjusted to your routine.

Challenging yourself can give your exercise routine and metabolism a boost. Try pushing yourself to work out 5 minutes longer, getting an extra 10-minute session in daily, or moving a little faster than usual. You should not push yourself in all areas at once (to avoid injury). A little push is all you may need to give your program a boost and see the pounds come off!

Behavioral Tip

Many people put off concentrating on their weight loss efforts. Think about times when you may have said to yourself, “I’ll follow the program correctly tomorrow”. Or, “I’ll start exercising next week”. Procrastination is a hard habit to break. You may convince yourself that eating that cupcake or sitting around watching television all day will make you feel better than eating an apple or taking a walk. Ironically, you usually end up feeling guilty and disappointed in yourself for not following your diet and remaining sedentary.

Maybe you know you’re procrastinating but aren’t sure why you can’t get motivated to focus on your weight loss efforts. It may help to examine the emotions that are triggered when you think about weight loss. Such emotions may include: fear of a lifestyle change, anger because you perceive that you have no control over your weight, a perfectionist attitude that the program is not worth the effort if you can’t follow it without making mistakes, fear of failure, or fear of success that will cause people to have higher expectations of you. All of these emotions can be dealt with. They become a problem when you don’t pay attention to your feelings.

Solutions involve focus and awareness. Try to talk about your feelings, write them down, or record them. Discuss them with a support person, and/or check out past behavioral tips that address specific emotions. Becoming aware of and taking steps to resolve emotional issues can help you break the habit of procrastination; so that you can put your best effort into your weight loss program.
