A study evaluated peppermint EO formulated in olive oil for its ability to support red blood cell (RBC) survival under serum-free conditions and limit microbial overgrowth. In vitro, the formulation maintained 35–45% RBC viability at day 18, significantly outperforming the control (olive oil alone). The formulation was also associated with a qualitative reduction in bacterial contamination, suggesting a dual membrane-protective and antimicrobial effect. These findings indicate that peppermint essential oil in a lipid carrier may enhance RBC stability and reduce background microbial growth in serum-free systems, with potential implications for blood handling and diagnostic applications.
