Today is Flag Day—but for many of us growing up, this day also carried another name: Betsy Ross Day.

While some details of her story have been debated, what remains true is this: Betsy Ross was a woman of remarkable courage during a time of war, upheaval, and uncertainty. A widowed upholsterer working in Revolutionary Philadelphia, she was asked by George Washington himself to create a new flag—one that would represent a young nation daring to break from the most powerful empire on Earth.

She accepted that challenge.

Let’s pause to consider what that meant. If caught helping the rebellion, Betsy could have been charged with treason—an offense punishable by death. In stitching that first flag, she wasn’t just crafting fabric. She was making a statement of resistance, of hope, and of vision for a new kind of nation.

That first flag—with its 13 stars in a circle—wasn’t just a design. It was a symbol of unity. Of equality. Of people daring to govern themselves.

So today, as flags wave across the country, let’s remember the quiet, determined hands of a woman who risked everything to support freedom. She wasn’t on the battlefield, but her work rallied hearts and lit a path forward.

Today is International Women’s Day! I am thankful for every strong woman that came before me. Those women went through so many trials and tribulations just so the women today could live better lives. I am thankful to those strong women who paved the way for me to become a US Marine. I am thankful for those women who paved the way for me to have the rights I have today. Thank you!
