October – Roadside Cowboys!

Hey folks, I apologize for being late. October has been busy. It is one of the busiest months of the racing season and I’ve been tied up with activities there. (2 AG wins and a race director gig)

In any event, October is the month we celebrated and contrasted Texas’ roadside Cowboys.
The smallest of the bunch is only 20 feet tall. He’s in the little village of Conlen, up near Dalhart in the panhandle.
Medium is Tex Randall, in Canyon TX. He’s 47 feet tall, but the high point of this statue is the authentic-looking Copenhagen ring on his back pocket.

I thought Big Tex at the State fair was the largest in the state—until I saw the statue of Sam Houston on I-45. Big Texas is 65 feet tall, while Sam Houston is 77 feet tall.

If you look at the base of that Sam Houston picture, you’ll see me by his left foot.

Hope you enjoy the roadside cowboys of October.
Also, I hope you have a chance to get out there and find your own Texas comparisons.

A little flashback a little thank you and a little advertising:

– for any of you that used to run cross country at Thompson Park, you probably remember how hard it is to run when the grass gets a little overgrown.
We used to run the LSRC Turkey Trot cross country through tall, wet grass.

– Thankfully, the city was mowing at Thompson Park today. We should have a well groomed course to run this Saturday, 10/04 at 9AM.

– So if you haven’t signed up for Oktoberfest, do it today. We’ll have festive T-shirts, seasonal refreshments and great music.

– Jonathan Guidi and Julian Villarreal will be playing from 10 – 12 that day.
They are some of the best musicians in town!

Come hang out with us and enjoy some great fall weather.

Sign up for a great run and fun after the race.

Jonathan William Guidi and Julian Villarreal will provide entertainment.

Refreshments include breakfast burritos and brats, along with some refreshing German beverages.

Texas schools start back in August and our football begins later this month. Football competition tends to reach full speed in September. Football is the inspiration for our big contrasts for September.

For September, I went out to explore the biggest and smallest football stadiums in the state. To be honest, I was expecting one of the pro teams to have the biggest stadium, but that honor goes to the Texas Aggies’ Kyle Field, with a total capacity of 102K
Second biggest stadium is UT, which holds 100 K
Third biggest is the Cotton Bowl, with 90K seats.

Coming in at #4 is the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium, football game seating of 80K.
Number 5 is NRG Field, home of the Houston Texans, with room for 72K fans.

The smallest Division 2 six man football team in Texas is in Dell City. Total high school enrollment at the last district realignment was 14.

The second smallest school to field a six man team was Patton Springs, with a total enrollment of 25 students.

Hope you enjoy this month’s pictures.
Get out there and support your favorite team!

Runnin’ the Route –
Celebrated the Mother Road again today, by running 6.6 miles along old Route 66 in Albuquerque.

It was a picturesque and fun course, but this old guy got schooled!
I placed 13/82 overall, while averaging about 8:30 a mile.
I was pleased with that. I figured I would win a bunch of my age group, but was in for a surprise.

13th overall, but only 3rd in the 65–69 age group. Looks like I get a big serving of humble pie. Still, it was fun touring Central Avenue in Albuquerque, the route of old Rt. 66.
Will come back to explore more of this area .

Best Friends in the Universe—Chapter 66.
ANOTHER example of how my running friends are the coolest!

A handful of dedicated runners joined me today, to celebrate and run the last few miles of Route 66 across Texas.

This one turned out to be a LOT more fun than I expected. More proof that—while you can’t always run a fast time—you can always have a fun time.

Plus, we found some of the coolest souvenirs, in the store out there at the Midpoint of Rt. 66.

Logistics for Sunday 8/10/25:

Start from the top of the bridge at Exit 18 at 8 o’clock, finish at the Midpoint line, 4 miles east of there.

Adrian is about 45 minutes west of Amarillo, straight down I-40.
The run will start west of there at Exit 18–the Gruhlkey Exit.
Please park on the north side of the interstate. There are several pullouts available that won’t interfere with any business parking.

There is a convenience store across the way, but they get a little salty, unless you’re shopping at their place.

For perspective, Soncy Rd. is at Exit 64.
Our starting point will be 46 miles west of there. Our finishing place will be near Exit 22, in Adrian.
Adrian is the Midpoint of Rt. 66.
There is a nice display, for photo options.
Also, there’s a great little café that has breakfast and pies. There’s a fun souvenir shop attached to it.

Should to be a fun morning and we ought to be back in Amarillo in time to hear Mitchell Ford sing at Twin Peaks.

Howdy runners and friends,
¡Solamente quatro mas!

I can finally confidently say that my Route 66 Grand Finale run will be this Sunday, 8/10/25, at 8 AM.
Just need four more miles, from mile marker 18, back into Adrian, at mile marker 22. Meet at the mile 18 marker, Gruhlkey exit.

Come join me for an easy 4 mile jog, followed by refreshments and fun.

If you’re thinking about going, please let me know. I would like to share a Route 66 memento with each of you.

If you can’t make it, there will certainly be some pictures and some memories shared on FB.

The month of August is usually the hottest part of summer. That’s often when it’s easiest to see the huge contrasts and variations in precipitation among the different regions of Texas.

The panhandle and far west Texas tend to be incredibly hot, windy, dusty and dry in August. These areas are almost desert-like, in late summer.
At the same time, the Rio Grande Valley and East Texas seem to stay very humid and green, year around.

Although we have been having an unusually rainy summer around Amarillo, you can bet that the weather in East Texas is always wetter and more humid.

Here are some pictures to help illustrate the wide variations in precipitation that we can experience in TX. Enjoy.

Also, get out there and explore it!

July—Transportation around Texas.

There is huge variation in the sizes and types of roads that pass through our big ol’ state.
There are likely tens of thousands of roads that vary from tiny, rutted, unpaved farm roads – all the way up to the biggest interstate highway in the USA.

The Katy freeway, just west of Houston is 26 lanes wide. That makes it the largest highway in the country.

Contrast that with this simple dirt road that crosses the Craighead Family farm in Hartley County. It will only hold one vehicle at a time.

Though modest, it connects rural Texas to small town Texas and to the highways and interstates that reach the great big cities of Texas.
As always, I encourage you to get out there and explore these places yourself. There is such a wonderful collection of things to see in our state.
