Logistics for Sunday 8/10/25:

Start from the top of the bridge at Exit 18 at 8 o’clock, finish at the Midpoint line, 4 miles east of there.

Adrian is about 45 minutes west of Amarillo, straight down I-40.
The run will start west of there at Exit 18–the Gruhlkey Exit.
Please park on the north side of the interstate. There are several pullouts available that won’t interfere with any business parking.

There is a convenience store across the way, but they get a little salty, unless you’re shopping at their place.

For perspective, Soncy Rd. is at Exit 64.
Our starting point will be 46 miles west of there. Our finishing place will be near Exit 22, in Adrian.
Adrian is the Midpoint of Rt. 66.
There is a nice display, for photo options.
Also, there’s a great little café that has breakfast and pies. There’s a fun souvenir shop attached to it.

Should to be a fun morning and we ought to be back in Amarillo in time to hear Mitchell Ford sing at Twin Peaks.

Howdy runners and friends,
¡Solamente quatro mas!

I can finally confidently say that my Route 66 Grand Finale run will be this Sunday, 8/10/25, at 8 AM.
Just need four more miles, from mile marker 18, back into Adrian, at mile marker 22. Meet at the mile 18 marker, Gruhlkey exit.

Come join me for an easy 4 mile jog, followed by refreshments and fun.

If you’re thinking about going, please let me know. I would like to share a Route 66 memento with each of you.

If you can’t make it, there will certainly be some pictures and some memories shared on FB.

The month of August is usually the hottest part of summer. That’s often when it’s easiest to see the huge contrasts and variations in precipitation among the different regions of Texas.

The panhandle and far west Texas tend to be incredibly hot, windy, dusty and dry in August. These areas are almost desert-like, in late summer.
At the same time, the Rio Grande Valley and East Texas seem to stay very humid and green, year around.

Although we have been having an unusually rainy summer around Amarillo, you can bet that the weather in East Texas is always wetter and more humid.

Here are some pictures to help illustrate the wide variations in precipitation that we can experience in TX. Enjoy.

Also, get out there and explore it!

To my running friends:
Next year is the 100th anniversary of Route 66. To help recognize that milestone, I’ve been doing some exploring on foot lately.

My recent goal has been to run/ jog all of old Rt. 66, where it crosses the Texas panhandle. That includes about 177 miles of highway and tons of cool Texas panhandle history.

So far, I’ve completed about 143 of those miles. All I have left to run are some stretches between Vega and the New Mexico line.
I’m saving the area around Adrian TX for the grand finale run, because that’s where the Midpoint of Route 66 is located. Adrian is halfway between Chicago and LA.

Sometime in the next few weeks, I’m hoping to have a little “grand finale” run. After that, we need to have drinks and snacks and photo opportunities at the “Midoint“. I would truly like to share that last run with my running family and my “usual suspects“.
I’ll be keeping you all posted over the next several days, so that we can find a time that works for as many people as possible.

Let’s go explore this great state and Rt. 66!

July—Transportation around Texas.

There is huge variation in the sizes and types of roads that pass through our big ol’ state.
There are likely tens of thousands of roads that vary from tiny, rutted, unpaved farm roads – all the way up to the biggest interstate highway in the USA.

The Katy freeway, just west of Houston is 26 lanes wide. That makes it the largest highway in the country.

Contrast that with this simple dirt road that crosses the Craighead Family farm in Hartley County. It will only hold one vehicle at a time.

Though modest, it connects rural Texas to small town Texas and to the highways and interstates that reach the great big cities of Texas.
As always, I encourage you to get out there and explore these places yourself. There is such a wonderful collection of things to see in our state.

Looking ahead to next year—
2026 is the 100th anniversary of the opening of US Highway 66.

To celebrate that, but I’m going to explore, study, photograph and celebrate a bunch of the “Texas“ parts of that iconic highway.

I’m still trying to decide if we should explore it going east to west, like the travelers during the dust bowl.
Or-would it be more fun to go west to east, from the Mile 0 sign at Glenrio NM to mile marker 176 near Texola OK?

What are your thoughts? Do you have a preference for which direction we explore?

Also, any suggestions for highlights that should be included on next year‘s calendar?
Let me know your preferences and we’ll go explore them together, on the pages of next year‘s calendar.

For June, we celebrate the huge expanse of interstate highways that criss-cross Texas.
Trivia — the longest distance of any US Interstate Highway within one state is IH-20.
It covers over 880 miles of Texas, from Mile Marker 0 west of El Paso, to Mile Marker 880 just east of Orange TX.

That’s the contrast for June— extreme W Texas v. extreme E Texas.
Folks, you have to see it to appreciate it.
Go.

May – Conservation

For May, we explore the state’s conservation efforts by visiting some of the Texas State parks. The contrast this month is between the oldest and newest state parks of Texas.

Texas’ original state park is Mother Neff State Park. It is near Moody TX, in the Waco area. It was established in 1926, by the mother of Texas’ governor at the time, Pat Morris Neff. This park is in bluebonnet country

Texas’ newest state park is Palo Pinto Mountains Park, just north of I-20 near the town of Strawn.
I was only able to take pictures from the public road near the border of the park, as it had not yet opened. However, it is scheduled be up and running within the next month or two.

Texas has dozens of these wonderful state parks. They allow us to explore the wide variety of sights within our state, while conserving so much its history and topography. This is a good time of year for y’all to get out there and visit some of the sites Texas has to offer.

A big thank you, to everyone that supported this year‘s Texas Contrasts calendar project. Thanks to y’all, we were able to donate a little over $4200 to the Wheelchairs for Warriors group.

You all rock! Thanks for your support.
Looking forward to sharing more sights and history and adventures in 2026.

Howdy everyone. In January, we contrasted north and south. Last month, we compared the furthest east and west places in Texas. For March, I want to share some scenes from the highest and lowest points in the state.

Texas has about 367 miles of coastline, all at sea level. In contrast, the highest point is Guadalupe peak at 8,751 feet above sea level.
One of the most dramatic mountains in Texas is El Capitan, the peak folks see as they approach Guadalupe Mountain State Park.
Here are some pics of these lowest and highest spots in Texas. Hope you enjoy these selections for March. More to come.

Running around Texas.
Down in Houston this morning for part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

—> Rodeo Run 10K

Wearing my race shirt from the least populous county in Texas (Loving County, population 42), in the biggest county in Texas (Harris County, population 7 million)

The weather was great, especially after what Amarillo has experienced lately.

If you get a chance, I highly recommend running this race. It’s one of the largest 10K’s Texas, but is easy to negotiate Very well produced. Smooth course—with music basically the entire way.

In January, we contrasted the furthest north and furthest south parts of Texas. (Cold v. warm, sun v. snow)
For February, we’re exploring the furthest east and furthest west points in the state. (Dry v. green)

One fun find on the eastern border of our state was this 185-year-old international boundary marker. It used to mark the boundary between Texas and the USA, back when Texas was an independent Republic.

I got stopped for speeding in Center TX, county seat of Shelby County.
The officers were very kind, asking me where I was headed.
I told them about this international marker, that was just 16 miles away. One of the officers was born and raised in Shelby County, but had never heard of that landmark.

I really hope that he’s had a chance to visit this spot by now. It’s a 5-foot tall solid granite post, another great example of TX history and contrasts.
