Howdy, I'm Avery! Texas native, amateur gardener, avid reader, self-proclaimed Peloton cyclist, proud UT alumni, aspiring yogi, cat AND dog lady, and most recently SLP turned business owner!
Having spent the majority of my career in acute care, I have always had FEES and MBSS right at my fingertips. I know I am truly serving my patients when I provide them with objective information about their swallow and a clear plan on we are going to fix it! Simply put: You can't treat what you can't see. This is so important to me because health and well-being shouldn't be a gamble.
When I was in high school, my dad was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's Disease, a disease that progressively impairs both speech and swallowing. His response: "You play the cards you are dealt." I became a SLP because I wanted to help people like my dad and give them the opportunity to "better their hand". For people with dysphagia, that means getting an instrumental swallow study to create a customized, accurate treatment plan.
Unfortunately, most people with dysphagia don't have access to swallow studies, especially in rural areas like the Texas Panhandle. That is what inspired me to start Panhandle Dysphagia Solutions. Instrumental swallow studies shouldn't be a luxury. All of our patients, in all settings, deserve the best: prompt access to swallow studies.
I am so grateful for all support I've received and look forward to seeing were this adventure takes us!
