In his “How to Build a Life,” column Arthur C. Brooks explained how fatherhood’s sacrifices can bring joy and how, when we recognize this sacrifice, dads’ overall well-being can increase. “Fatherhood, like motherhood, requires obvious economic and social sacrifices. But on the happiness balance sheet, the evidence supporting it is very strong,” Brooks explains. “Researchers in 2001 found that men who lived with their young children (or who had grown children) had significantly higher life satisfaction and were less likely to suffer from depression than men who were childless or who were living apart from their young children.“
Dads who don’t resist the sacrifices that fatherhood demands are often happier, Brooks writes, and can enjoy what’s known as the “helper’s high” from supporting loved ones. “You can make your dad even happier by acknowledging and thanking him for the ways he’s served your family … Research overwhelmingly illustrates that showing your appreciation will likely improve your relationship and make you happier,” Brooks continues.
