As we begin the New Year, many set their minds on their resolutions. Unfortunately, surveys show that the vast majority of those resolutions will fail within three weeks.
This is but one everyday example of the same core principle we speak about frequently in the internal arts. That principle is willpower. In the Chinese systems we refer to this as the Zhi, on of the Wu Shen (Five Spirits) that resides in the kidneys.
Modern society suffers from an epidemic of deficient Zhi. This leads not only to failed training, failed resolutions, but lack of drive and lack of integrity. People become inert and ineffectual. Laziness and apathy take hold, and a downward spiral sets in.
As we set out into this New Year, let us not carry the same weight of failure with us. Failure to do that which we set our minds toward is a negation of the self. We must cultivate the will to bring to pass that which we speak and intend.
