It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to one of our co-founders, Dr. Virgil Pate. Nearly a decade ago, when we opened our surgery center, we met Dr. Pate at the end of his professional journey, dedicated to leaving a legacy of compassion, respect, and dignity. In every interaction, his calming words made a difference. He carried himself with a refreshing humility. To him, being a surgeon was a calling, not just a job.
He was always one to lead by example when it came to exceptional care, giving each patient his full attention, and taking the time to make them feel cared for and understood. He never rushed through appointments, and simple questions were never brushed aside; he prioritized his patients above all else. He remembered that healthcare is fundamentally about people and that everyone deserved his time, energy, intelligence, and self.
He extended that same grace and courtesy to the entire team, making each of us feel essential to our patients’ care. He instilled a sense of belonging and worth in us, creating a safe and supportive work environment. In particular, Dr. Pate shared a special bond with his friend and medical assistant, Bruce Edwards. Their partnership was unparalleled in the medical field, and benefitted all of us. Even after Dr. Pate's retirement, we continue to reap the rewards, as Bruce remains with our center.
To Dr. Pate, every staff member was important— worthy of kindness and appreciation. A true educator at heart, he took the time to explain the nuances of urology to our team. As a field many healthcare workers aren't familiar with, we needed some guidance when we first opened our doors. Dr. Pate happily and patiently clarified both simple and complex concepts, always with a “we’ve got this” expression. His passion for his work inspired us to seek knowledge for the betterment of our patients.
In a warm and familiar way, he often spoke of his beloved wife, Debra, sharing stories that revealed a partnership built on mutual respect, admiration, and love. His eyes lit up when he talked about their children and their families, often sharing simple yet heartfelt moments with our team. It was evident, that upon reflection, he knew his family was the foundation for his strength and success as a surgeon.
Ultimately, we remember the profound impact Dr. Pate had on so many lives. He leaves behind not only his family and friends but also a legacy of compassion, and generosity. We encourage all of you to carry forward Dr. Pate’s spirit—treat others with respect, appreciate the beauty of simple moments, and approach each day with purpose.
Rest in peace, dear Dr. Pate. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of those you touched, and you will be forever missed.
