80 years ago today - Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force General Dwight Eisenhower is speaking with paratroopers of the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles".

This photo of the paratroopers was taken about 8:30 p.m. on June 5 prior to their boarding aircraft for the airborne portion of the D-Day invasion. Early on the morning of June 6th they began parachuting into France near and in the town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise in Normandy, France. Their job was to land behind German lines to secure strategic bridges and roads so that any German attempt to turn back the Allied amphibious landing could be prevented.

Over the next few days, some 2,500 US paratroopers would be KIA or MIA. The soldier in front of Eisenhower is Lt. Strobel. He survived D-Day, the rest of the war, and lived a long life. He passed away in 1999. For many of the soldiers in this image, this was the last sunset they would ever see.
