Yesterday, we had the honor to help celebrate WWII Army Veteran Charles Elliott's 100th birthday! Mr. Elliott lives at the Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo and requested 100 birthday cards for his 100th birthday. At his birthday celebration, he received over 5,000 birthday cards from the Amarillo community! AVAHCS was happy to present Mr. Elliot with a large birthday card signed by several of our staff and a centenarian certificate from VA Secretary Doug Collins. Happy Birthday and thank you for your service, Mr. Elliot!

March 3 is National Anthem Day!

On September 14, 1814, U.S. soldiers raised a large American flag at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland to celebrate their victory over British forces during the War of 1812. Poet Francis Scott Key was inspired by seeing the flag after witnessing the fort’s bombardment. He wrote a poem called "Defence of Fort M'Henry." It’s National Consumer Protection Week! Visit ftc.gov/ncpw for consumer protection advice and materials for the Veteran and military community. .

VA is committed to raising awareness, on how to spot scams, identify red flags, and report suspicious activity. Veterans and their loved ones are frequent targets of government imposter fraud scams, with millions of dollars lost each year. Scammers often impersonate government officials to trick victims into giving away money or sensitive personal information.

Stay alert for:
• Unsolicited Calls/Emails:
• Urgent Action/Pressure
• Unusual Payment Methods
• Guaranteed Payouts

Protect yourself and your information:
• Never share your Social Security number, VA claim number, or financial information unless you are sure of the requester's identity.
• Use official VA websites (VA.gov) or known phone numbers to verify any contact.
• If you spot a scam, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If a Veteran is missing a VA benefits payment, identifies a discrepancy in payments, or finds suspicious activity with their direct deposit account, contact VA immediately at 1-800-827-1000.
