Sensory Overload Is Real!

When you’ve experienced trauma, your nervous system stays on high alert, constantly scanning the environment for threats. Every sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch can pour into your emotional “bucket” until it overflows.

This image is such a great reminder that overwhelm often starts in the senses—and it’s not about being “too sensitive.” It’s about your body doing its best to protect you.

Regulation starts with awareness. Grounding exercises, sensory breaks, or even just pausing to breathe can help you regain a sense of control when your emotional bucket starts to spill over.
