Therapist Thursday! Meet Maura 🌻

Hi! I’m Maura, a Mental Health Therapist based in Pennsylvania. I completed my master’s degree in Counseling at Villanova University in 2020. I am passionate about working with teens and young adults. Since graduating I have served as a School Counselor in Montgomery County. I have worked with adolescents as they navigate challenges such as depression, anxiety, negative body image, and family changes. I also have extensive experience supporting individuals dealing with complex family illnesses, bullying, and anxiety.

As a therapist, I strive to create a safe and supportive space for clients. I practice as a Relational and Person-Centered Therapist, with an approach rooted in building genuine and empathetic relationships. In our sessions, we’ll unpack the stories and beliefs that influence your self-perception. We may also use journaling as a tool to strengthen your connection to your inner voice and break down patterns of minimization, peacemaking, and perfectionism. My ultimate goal is to help client’s build the confidence to handle life’s inevitable challenges.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, practicing yoga and going on walks with my two adorable dogs, Luna and Sunshine, with my fiancƩ, Rob.

Positive Self-Talk 🌻

Have you had that nagging voice in your head telling you you’re not good enough? Whose voice is it that’s saying that?

It sounds so simple, but sometimes talking back to that negative voice in your head with a positive affirmation can begin the long journey of being kinder to yourself. If your negative self-talk says you’re not good enough, try telling yourself ā€œyou’ve done more than enoughā€ or maybe ā€œyour worth is bigger than your productivityā€.

What would work for you?!

Can you feel hibernation season approaching? 🌬

Much like how the trees shed their leaves and turn inward to preserve their energy, we may also start to feel a bit more introverted, fatigued, and particular about how we spend our energy. It’s a beautiful thing to embrace this time with gratitude to turn inward and renew, preparing for a growth season to come. 🌱

The rest and recharge is just as important as the growth.

Therapist Thursday! Meet Janaeyah 🌻

I am a recent graduate from Widener University with a master’s in social work, after receiving a B.A in Women and Gender studies from The College of New Jersey. My passion for accompanying others along their life journey led me to complete my first internship at Friends Central Lower school and then my second internship at University Pennsylvania’s counseling center. Through both experiences I was able to gain valuable experience working with adolescents and young adults with a wide range of presenting concerns such as anxiety, trauma, adjustment, academic related concerns, and cultural concerns.
I primarily utilize person-center approaches, imagery, mindfulness, and visualization with a multi-cultural perspective. In session, I allow the client to be in the driver’s seat and I accompany them on their journey. They always are in control of the pace and speed in session. I emphasis and draw from creativity, authenticity, empowerment, and engagement while in session.
I strive to work with clients who hold marginalized identities and create and foster safe spaces for them to be heard, seen, and known.

Therapist Thursday! Meet Amber 🌻

Hi, I’m Amber! I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and I have experience working with children, teens and adults in individual and group therapy settings. Disordered eating and body image are areas of special interest for me, and I also have experience working with people who have depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD and ADHD. I implement cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy and person-centered approaches to support my clients in processing emotions, navigating life stressors, building positive coping skills, and fostering personal growth.

I am originally from Pittsburgh, PA and am an avid Steelers and Penguins fan. I am a former collegiate swimmer and still compete in open water races in the summer, and teach the occasional swim lesson on the weekends. In my free time, I also enjoy yoga, playing Animal Crossing, and reading. I live locally with my husband and two cats, Loki and Mako.

As we see the school buses breezing by, we’re reminded that tweens and teens are just settling into a new school (or starting next week)! šŸ“š Some of us might feel excited to flex that first day of school outfit and see our friends at lunch, while others might be feeling in a bit of a whirlwind.

Time and time again, we see that teens often feel best supported when surrounded by other teens. Our relatable group facilitators (therapists from our team) have been working diligently to put together an autumnal group to aid in these new bumps in the road! Check out our ā€œquick linksā€ to learn more or submit an inquiry! šŸŒ»šŸ¤“

Back to school means back to routines and cognitive demands. Dr. Szarko will share about the impact of executive functioning differences, so often seen with individuals with ADHD. She will connect executive functions with learning needs and provide practical suggestions for parents and students to get the school year off to a positive and productive start.

Dr. Julia Szarko is a psychologist with Ambler Counseling Center as well as a nationally certified school psychologist who has spent her entire career practicing in public school settings. She graduated from the University of Richmond with a BA in Psychology then went onto the Pennsylvania State University to earn both her MS and PhD in School Psychology. Throughout her career, she has maintained an expertise in autism assessment, including providing training at the National level. In addition, Julia has extensive experience in student and system level intervention and support, including leadership and advocacy work at the local, state, and federal levels to promote access to school mental health services for all students. In recognition of her professional contributions, Julia was awarded the Pennsylvania School Psychologist of the Year in 2019 and the National School Psychologist of the Year in 2021.
