When a person’s speech is hard to understand, it’s natural to wonder why 💭 Speech is complex - many factors can impact speech intelligibility, including motor planning, sound patterns, and coordination. That’s why we focus on understanding each individual’s communication profile and providing support that is targeted, functional, and meaningful. Have questions? We’d love to hear from you!

You may hear us say “wake up face” in sessions! This is a short, structured routine we sometimes use before eating or speech activities to help bring awareness to the lips, tongue, and jaw. For some individuals, this added input can support sensory normalization and help them feel more ready for functional tasks like eating, drinking, and speech. As always, everything we do is based on each person’s needs!

✔️At the cheeks, we provide gentle, firm pressure downward, sometimes adding small circular movements near the jaw to support awareness and coordination.

✔️ For the chin, we use slow, controlled circular input to continue building sensory awareness.

✔️ Then at the lips, we apply light, targeted pressure across different points to help bring attention to this area.

The goal is not just movement, but helping the system become more organized and ready for functional tasks like eating, drinking, and speech.

While the lips, tongue, and jaw are important for speech, many speech differences are actually related to how movements are planned, timed, and coordinated - not just strength. At MMTA, we focus on understanding each individuals’s unique communication profile so we can provide support that is meaningful, functional, and personalized.

This month, we’re diving into oral motor skills!
Oral motor development plays an important role in how we eat, drink, and speak. From coordinating the lips, tongue, and jaw to supporting safe and efficient feeding - these skills impact everyday function in meaningful ways.
Throughout the month, we’ll be breaking down what oral motor skills are, how they show up across developement, and how we support them in therapy. Stay tuned! ✨ Have questions about oral motor, feeding, or speech? Send us a DM - we might answer it in an upcoming post!

We loved being part of the Inclusive Post-High School Resource Fair this weekend!

It was so great to reconnect with familiar faces and meet new individuals, families, and professionals who are all working toward the same goal - supporting meaningful transitions into adulthood.

Events like this are such an important reminder of the power of collaboration, community, and shared knowledge. We’re so grateful to be part of a network that continues to advocate for and support individuals with diverse communication and learning needs. 🧠💭

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to connect with us!

A question we hear often: “How can I help my child branch out from talking about the same thing?” 💭
For many individuals, generating new topics - or knowing how to keep a conversation going - is something we teach.
One way we support this is by practicing both:
✔️Asks (questions you can ask someone)
✔️Tells (comments you can share)

In this session, we’re brainstorming questions related to a familiar topic (St. Patrick’s Day ☘️) to help expand conversational flexibility.

This month, we’re diving into social cognition!
One of our directors, Jan Mesaric, is kicking things off by breaking down the building blocks of conversation - and how we explicitly teach these skills in a way that makes sense for each learner. Conversation isn’t just about talking; it’s about noticing, understanding perspective, and responding. We’re excited to share more throughout the month ✨💭

In today’s dynamic social world, interpreting visual cues and understanding intention matters. Our Sightlines series teaches the skill of pairing what someone is looking at with their facial expression and body language to determine what they might be thinking as a precursor to making a prediction about what they might do.

These materials were designed to explicitly teach that progression in a structured, accessible way.

The Sightlines Activity Bundle includes all the cards from Activities 1, 2, and 3 (which can be bought separately), making the full teaching sequence readily available - and yes, Steps 4 & 5 are on the way👀

We love seeing these tools spark meaningful engagement in sessions. 👏
