This is such a πŸ”₯ hot-button issue πŸ”₯ in the field! So many not-so-productive arguments about whether tethered oral tissue (tongue and lip ties) impacts speech.
Here I am to say it's rare in my cases. Compensations? YES. I've found that release of tongue tie is recommended due to serious /r/ distortions, with no gliding, no vowelization, and no obvious motor concerns.
An interdental /s/ and lateralized /s/ is also a popular find. This makes sense because it is not resting on the palate as it should be. (The πŸ‘… works where it lives!)
Compensations are far more prevalent during my evaluations. This means the blade of the tongue may be working more than the tongue tip.
Never have I ever seen bilabials omitted because of a lip tie. Rather, I observe an open oral posture/mouth breathing, which requires the lips to travel farther than they should to produce speech sounds.
If you disagree, I'd embrace a healthy conversation! I also acknowledge that because I've not seen it, it doesn't mean it's not possible.
What do you see in your evaluations?

WHAT A WEEK! πŸ’œπŸ’š
5/6 of my kids in the CAS Intensive were from the Helping Hands for GAND community, a rare genetic disorder that impacts many areas of development, including speech production.
These kids work harder than they should have to for speech. Something we take for granted. Motor speech is a physically, emotionally, mentally exhausting process, especially in an intensive format.
These kids participated all while laughing and smiling the entire time. This week was a valuable life lesson for me. Life can be tough, but keep going and keep smiling!
I needed these kids this week way more than they needed me πŸ’•
To the families who traveled from out of state, I thank you for this priceless time with your children. They gave me amazing memories and lessons that I will cherish.
Until next time πŸ˜‰
