After Andrea Ingram had surgery on her right side due to an aneurysm rupture, she needed therapy to help build her strength back up.

Andrea began physical therapy at our Robinson center in Mckees Rock, PA. She enjoys fishing, crocheting and crafts, but after surgery, lost her stability and could no longer enjoy such activities. She felt tired, had low energy and needed a cane to walk because of poor balance.

During physical therapy, Andrea worked with our Katie Tarquinio, physical therapist and center manager, for approximately six months. As therapy progressed, Andrea began noticing a big difference in her life – she was starting to feel happy again.

“I remember being so happy that I could walk and not wander to my left,” said Andrea. “I also remember being so happy that I rode the bike for two miles. After a couple of weeks, I noticed improvement every time I left an appointment and remember feeling really good that I no longer needed a cane to walk.”

After months of therapy, Andrea has reached her goals of being stable on her feet and regaining strength. She doesn’t get as tired as quickly and even started to go fishing again.

“Katie was amazing,” said Andrea. “She kept me going with encouragement and praise. The whole staff was truly friendly, kind and celebrated when I would reach a new milestone. I would not be where I am today if not for NovaCare.”

Concussion – Unsafe at Any Impact?

Concussion isn’t just a sports injury thing. It can happen in many ways that you may not be aware of. Check out our blog on concussion myths that just aren’t true.

Concussion – Unsafe at Any Impact? One of the myths about concussion is that it takes a big blow to the head to get one. A second is that getting your “bell rung” or “seeing stars” isn’t a big deal. They’re just that. Myths.

Chip's not afraid to set lofty goals and put in the work to get there! After a total knee replacement, Chip told his physical therapy team that in six months, he wanted to go mountain biking in the Arctic Circle. Congrats, Chip, for reaching your goal!

Chip said, "That seemed like an unrealistic goal at the time, but last week, after a lot of planning, much work and many miles, my son and I unloaded our bikes and hit a trail outside of Cold Foot, Alaska - about 50 miles north of the Arctic Circle. It was a grand adventure! You played a huge part in making that happen. Thank You!"

When professional grappler Alejandro Wajner ruptured his ACL and tore his meniscus during a match, he thought his career was over. He felt defeated. However, other professional athletes recommended that Alejandro reach out to physical therapist Collin Overstreet at our Benton, IL location. Now, Alejandro is back to competing, and his knee feels stronger than ever.

Alejandro said, "Having to start from scratch and rebuild was a mental thing I had to get over. Luckily with the constant motivation from Colin and the rest of the staff, I had no issues grinding through the hardest parts of my journey back to the competition scene. It doesn’t matter if you’re a pro athlete, a high school kid, an elderly person or just an average human who needs help. Everyone gets the same attention, and they always go above and beyond. I’d 100% recommend them to friends and family."

Go get 'em, Alejandro!

It's a joy to work with 100-year-old Juliette, and the feeling is mutual. Rebecca Moncrief, occupational therapist at our Roseville, MN center, shared the following quote from Juliette.

"I always feel good after leaving therapy. The massage really helps with my pain. You are always so respectful, and I feel like you listen to me. You always ask me and respect what I say. Most of the things I do on my own, like dressing and eating, I couldn’t do before seeing you. Now there are still some things I am working on, but I can take care of those types of things. I am so happy with the changes it has made for me."

Athletes and parents of athletes... An injury to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in the elbow is a common occurrence in youth athletes and professionals, specifically in over hand sports. In the latest edition of 'Your Questions, Our Experts', our Kevin Wilk, vice president and national director of clinical education and research for Select Medical’s Outpatient Division, talks Tommy John Surgery and gives risk factors that can prevent a UCL tear.

Nine-year-old McKenzy first came to physical therapy at our Brownstown, PA center in 2016 due to concerns from her persistent toe walking. She was later discharged, but in 2018 she began feeling groin pain. Her mother, Sandra, asked for a new physical therapy evaluation.

Upon evaluation, it did not appear to be a groin strain, which had been the diagnosis after an urgent care visit. McKenzy followed up with an orthopedic surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP) and was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) in her left hip. LCPD occurs when the blood supply to the ball part of the hip joint is temporarily interrupted and the bone begins to die.

After surgery, McKenzy was in a full leg cast, followed by bracing for several weeks. She then had to transition from using a wheelchair to a walker. Eventually, through the power of physical therapy, she returned to daily activities.

Unfortunately, a few months later, McKenzy began having symptoms in her right hip. She was again diagnosed with LCPD and had surgery. After more immobilization and bracing, she began physical therapy for a third time. She continued to persevere and worked hard by listening to her body while also challenging her muscles and joints.

After working with our Sarah Crowther, physical therapist, McKenzy finally graduated from physical therapy this past August. She’s now running, jumping, riding her bike, going to school and even taking aerial silk classes.

McKenzy had such a positive experience that she sent this text (see below) to her teacher when asked what the best part of summer was. We are so proud of her and happy that she recognizes her accomplishments.

Having to learn to walk again as an adult is a physically and mentally difficult task. When David had surgery to remove a lower lumbar infection, weakness and nerve damage left him unable to lift his foot and walk properly. Dean Grabigel, physical therapy at our Rochester, PA location, encouraged and helped him regain strength.

David has been happy with his care and says, "Wow, I cannot say enough about this place and team. They all exhibited patience and understanding when I didn't feel well or strong. I really appreciate that. Because of therapy, I have made tremendous progress."

Like so many across the country, Rick has caught pickleball fever. Unfortunately, his desire to push his skills to the next level left him with a shoulder injury. He tried to play through it, but soon realized he was going to need professional help.

Rick says, "After seeing my doctor about it, he recommended physical therapy. I began seeing Steven at NovaCare in Logan Township. Steve took the time to evaluate my needs and develop a great plan for me. He worked with me over the next few weeks to get me back to the flexibility and strength I had before. Thanks to Steven and the NovaCare team, I’m back playing pickleball!"

Maya says, "There isn't just one moment that stands out during this journey of recovery. I feel like each day is a special moment to me because I'm getting closer and closer to getting back to 110%. This journey is a process that is going to stay with me for the rest of my life. It's been such a life-changing experience and I can't wait to see myself in the next months to come."

Several months ago, Pam Grant, patient service specialist from our center in Rochester, PA, greeted a patient and she noticed he seemed off and alerted a clinician to have his blood pressure checked. His blood pressure was significantly elevated and emergency medical services (EMS) were called immediately. He was then transported to the hospital and placed on blood pressure medications. Each visit after, his blood pressure was checked prior to treatment and he thanked Pam before each session for saving his life!

As we celebrate Patient Service Specialist Month, we'd like to thank Pam for being quick on her feet and helping those in need. Way to go, Pam!
