‼️Calling all moms of 0-12 month olds! Supporting speech and language development this young is absolutely possible, and can help keep your baby on track.

Here are 3 easy ways to help your baby meet their communication milestones:

1. Respond to coos and babbles. When parents respond to their babies, it exposes the baby to new words and sounds and helps teach communication patterns

2. Use small, simple phrases. Avoid using too many words, and try to focus on repeating common words so your baby can catch on to the sound of them.

3. Incorporate sign language and gestures. Babies imitate gestures before words. Imitation is an important part of developing speech and language skills!

Remember to save for reference later and share with the parent of a 0-12 month old 🤍

‼️ Calling all busy toddler moms! Supporting your child’s speech + language development is a lot easier than you think.

Here are 3 simple things I do as a busy mom and speech language pathologist to help my kids meet their communication milestones:

1. Avoid asking questions. Asking lots of open-ended or yes/no questions can actually inhibit your child in the long run. Instead, try reframing your question as a statement

2. Repeat yourself often. Children learn best through repetition, so don’t be afraid to use the same simple words over and over to help your child catch on.

3. Offer choices in options of two. This helps support a toddler learning new words by taking away some of the stress of word-finding and giving them an adult model.

Try doing these 3 things daily and watch your child’s communication improve! Remember to save this for later and share with the parent of a toddler.

So you have a 2-yr-old…

At this age, we see a lot of communication growth! Here are some things to look for with your 2-yr-old’s speech and language:

By age 2, toddlers should be combining words often, like:
• mommy help
• more juice
• fast car

You may also notice these things:
• tries to get your attention (“look!”)
• says their name when asked
• uses plural words (“toys”, “puppies”)
• asks “why” and “how”
• answers simple questions like “where is daddy?”

At this point, toddlers should be able to accurately say these sounds: p, b, m, h, w, d, and n, along with vowel sounds.

You should notice that speech is becoming clearer, even though it’s normal for others to have a hard time understanding your child.

If your 2-yr-old isn’t meeting these milestones, speech therapy may help! Follow us for tips and tricks.

Parents, did you know your baby’s babbling can actually predict future speech development??

Babbling isn’t just cute — it’s an important milestone that helps build the foundation for speech and language. Research shows that both the amount of babbling and the variety of sounds babies produce can give clues about how their speech and language skills may develop later on.

When babies babble, they’re practicing how to coordinate their mouth movements, listening to the sounds they make, and learning how speech works. This early experimentation helps set the stage for real words.

Most babies begin babbling around 6 months, and infants who do not meet this milestone may be at higher risk for a speech or language delay.

If you’re noticing limited babbling or have concerns about your baby’s communication development, early support can make a big difference.

The first year of life is such a huge period of growth for speech and language development!

Even before babies say their first words, they are learning important communication skills like:
• making sounds and cooing
• babbling
• experimenting with their voice
• trying to imitate adult speech

These early milestones help us know if speech and language development is on track.

Every child develops at their own pace, but knowing what to look for can help parents feel confident and catch potential concerns early.

Parents commonly ask me how to know if their preschooler’s speech is “normal.”

A helpful guideline we use in speech therapy is:

Age 3 → about 50% understood by others
Age 4 → about 75%-90% understood by others
Age 5 → about 100% understood by others

If your child is harder to understand than expected for their age, it may be worth taking a closer look at their speech development.

Early support can make a big difference.
