Are ultra-processed foods everyone’s secret addiction?
Similar to to***co and alcohol, ultraprocessed foods are addictive in nature and becoming a serious health concern. And many to***co companies like Phillip Morris now own processed food companies like Kraft and Nabisco. Here is what you need to know:
📊 The Stats:
• About 14% of adults and 12% of children show signs of addiction to ultra-processed foods.
• Common culprits? Think fast food, pizza, fries, snacks, candy and soda.
🚨 The Impact:
• These foods can trigger intense cravings and loss of control—just like traditional addictive substances!
• UPFA (Ultra-processed Food Addiction) is linked to higher rates of type 2 diabetes, cancer, mental health issues, and can complicate weight loss efforts.
🧠 Why It Matters:
• Ultra-processed food addiction is not just a personal struggle; it is a public health crisis that contributes to rising rates of obesity and chronic diseases.
• With nearly 1 in 7 adults and 1 in 8 children affected, understanding UPFA is crucial for developing effective approaches and policies that can help us break the cycle and promote healthier lifestyles.
💡 What Can We Do?
• Break the addiction by quitting ultra-processed foods.
• Become aware of your triggers and make healthier food choices.
• Seek out emotional coping strategies like mindfulness and journaling. My book Chris Beat Cancer or Beat Cancer Daily are resources to help with this.
• Keep an eye out for and support public policies that crack down on addictive food ingredients and limit marketing to children, like the old Joe Camel ads.
