Last night at the Northern State Tournament here in Utah, my son took a loss that was absolutely devastating. This one hurt—deeply. There was so much anticipation going into it, so much excitement and belief from his coaches, from other parents, and especially from my wife, who grinds with him day in and day out through the chaos of his wrestling schedule. Anyone who knows our family knows how much she sacrifices to support him.
As a national-level wrestler, the expectations are high, and when you invest that much time, energy, and heart into something, a loss like this hits different. It stings. It lingers. It tests you.
But here’s what I know: I could not be more proud of him. That same night he wanted to get back at it. His grit, his resilience, and his refusal to accept defeat define who he is far more than any match result ever could. He shows up, he works, he learns, and he keeps moving forward. That mindset—the ability to take a hard loss, feel it, and still stand back up—is what will take him far not just in wrestling, but in life.
This chapter hurts, but it’s not the end of the story. I believe in you, son. Always.
