Our Story
NAMI of CI is a support group made up of those with mental illness, their friends, families, and members of their communities in the Central Iowa Community Services Region. Our goal is to make a better life for people affected by mental illness through support, education, and advocacy. We serve as a source of understanding and encouragement for all who face mental health issues or have a loved one with mental illness. The Mental Health Wellness Center located in Ames, IA is open from 1pm-4pm Monday through Friday and is a safe place for those with a mental illness to gather to participate in various activities as crafts, art, yoga, writing group, pilates, Connection Support Group, board games, agency awareness presentations and discussions, knitting, current events discussions, book club, etc. NAMI Central Iowa holds weekly Connection Support Groups for persons with mental illness at the Wellness Center every Thursday from 2pm-3:30pm and family support group on the 4th Thursday of every month at 7PM. NAMI Central Iowa holds educational meetings on topics relating to mental health at the Ames Public Library on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7PM. NAMI Central Iowa offers yearly educational classes for persons living with mental illness and for family members: Family to Family, Peer to Peer, and Basics. NAMI Central Iowa is working to extend the NAMI classes and support groups to each of the 10 counties in the Central Iowa Community Services Region.
