We had such a wonderful day taking some of our residents on a trip to the covered bridges in Winterset! We enjoyed a simple sack lunch surrounded by beautiful scenery and even better company.

It was also so neat to take in some of the history and see these beautiful covered bridges up close.

There were so many stories shared, along with plenty of smiles and laughter throughout the day!

What better way to celebrate National Zoo Lovers Day than having Blank Park Zoo come visit us and bring some amazing animal friends along.

We had the chance to meet a Rothschild’s porcupine and a turtle. Such a fun and unforgettable experience for everyone!

Our residents and staff truly enjoyed it. There were lots of smiles, and we learned so much!

Our February and March Resident Spotlights are combined this year due to a truly unique and special story we couldn’t wait to share!

Steven was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and later adopted and raised on a farm in Ledyard, Iowa. After high school, he attended Iowa Lakes Community College to study carpentry.

Steven spent 20 years working at a hotel in the Twin Cities in kitchen cleaning and housekeeping, then worked as a recycling coordinator at a hotel in Alexandria, Minnesota for four years. He later joined Menards, helping set up the new store in Spencer, Iowa, before transferring to Fort Dodge and eventually moving to Ames to work as a detailer for Wilson Toyota.

After an injury, Steven joined the Accura community in December 2021. He enjoys the activities and appreciates the staff, has made many great friends, and even met someone special!

Susan was born and raised in Ames, Iowa. She attended Ames High School and studied Business Management at ISU. Susan began her career as a bank teller and worked her way up to assistant branch manager in Des Moines for 15 years. Later, she transferred to the Ames branch, worked in real estate, served as her church secretary, and worked part-time as a car dealer for over 20 years.

Susan has a deep passion for sharing her faith. She taught Sunday School for 28 years, participated in children’s sermons for 20 years, and helped with Vacation Bible School for over two decades. She joined the Accura family in August 2024 and says she feels truly cared for, has found a family here, and maybe even something a little more special!

Their Love Story

On February 6th, Susan and Steven, who had grown very fond of each other, decided to take a leap of faith. After lunch, as Steven walked Susan to her room, just as he does every day, Susan shared that he had made her fall for her.
Steven returned to his room, then came back with a rose and a leap of faith of his own. He told Susan he loved her and began to ask an important question, but before he could even finish, Susan excitedly said “yes!”

While no official date is set yet, they are planning a wedding this summer and enjoying every moment of preparing together. We are all so excited for them, and many of us could see how much they cared for each other even before they admitted it. They are absolutely glowing, and we can’t wait to watch their love continue to blossom and grow!

What an egg-cellent day we had at our Easter Egg Hunt!

We loved seeing so many kids come out to enjoy the day. The egg hunt, cookie decorating, charcuterie board, tattoos, and balloon animals kept everyone smiling, and a special visit from the Easter Bunny made it even more fun!

Our residents truly enjoyed connecting with the community and spending time with all the little ones. It was a day full of laughter, smiles, and sweet moments.

🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀

Today we brought the luck of the Irish right to our residents with our very own bar crawl! From fun festive drinks and tasty treats to decorations and goodies at every stop, it was an afternoon full of smiles, laughter, and great memories.

To make it even more magical, we had our very own leprechaun manning one of the pubs!

It was so much fun celebrating together and seeing everyone get into the spirit!!

Friday we celebrated National Pi Day the best way we know how, by throwing pies in the administration team’s faces!

There was a lot of laughter, a big mess, and plenty of smiles from everyone watching. The admin team were such good sports for playing along!

Happy Long Term Care Administrators Week to our amazing administrator, Eric, at Accura HealthCare of Ames!

Eric’s leadership, dedication, and support for both our residents and staff never go unnoticed. He’s always willing to step into any role when needed and is a good sport about any crazy thing we manage to wrangle him into. Whether it’s supporting the team, helping with residents, or joining in on the fun, he truly leads by example.

Thank you, Eric, for everything you do to make Accura HealthCare of Ames such a great place for our residents and staff. We appreciate you!

💘 Valentine’s Day Party Recap 💘

We had a wonderful Valentine’s Day party on Saturday filled with good food, fun games, and lots of smiles shared all around. It was truly a special afternoon spent celebrating friendship, laughter, and love with our residents.

We also crowned our Valentine’s King and Queen. Clark was our original winner, and while we are heartbroken that he passed before we could crown him, he was truly loved and will be deeply missed. In his honor, Randy was crowned King and Joyce was crowned Queen, and although they were a little bashful, they both wore their titles proudly. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so meaningful. Moments like these remind us how special our community truly is!

Our Upside-Down Philosophy

Accura HealthCare is an Iowa based healthcare company that manages and operates 32 skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers, 13 assisted living centers, and 1 independent center.
