Hello everyone, meet Jill Macken. Jill was born on June 29, 1965. She was born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota, and she is proud to have grown up in the city that is home to the Mayo Clinic. She has five siblings of a wide range of ages. Their differences led to typical sibling behaviors, but they all loved one another. Jill’s mother was mostly a single parent, and Jill has said she doesn’t know how her mother managed everything. One of her favorite family memories was gathering around the television to watch The Carol Burnett Show. They loved how funny and silly the characters were, and Jill especially cherished the feeling of everyone being happy and laughing together.

School was sometimes a challenge for Jill, but she never let that stop her. Growing up, she played hockey and soccer, and her school offered adaptive sports, which allowed her to participate in activities she enjoyed.

After high school, Jill decided to wait a few years before going to college. When the time felt right, she attended a vocational-technical college and majored in Human Services. To avoid struggling, she spread her classes over multiple semesters—a decision she calls the best she ever made. She also arranged for one or two tutors, for which she is very thankful. Out of all the classes she took, she was surprised to discover that psychology became her favorite. Jill was very proud when she finally graduated.

Jill has a big heart, reflected in her volunteer work with adults with disabilities. She volunteered at both the Salvation Army Adult Daycare and REM Home, and of the two, she said REM Home was her favorite. There, she worked with adults of all ages who had a variety of disabilities, and she was happy to help and make a difference in their lives.

Some of Jill’s favorite hobbies include coloring, listening to music, and playing The Sims. She said that if she could, she would play The Sims all day. Coloring is a big part of her life—it allows her to express herself and helps her anxiety, much like music does. Jill enjoys all kinds of music, but her top two favorite genres are classic rock, like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, and praise and worship music, such as Brandon Lake, whom she absolutely loves. She finds it funny that these two favorites are practically the opposite of each other.

In 2020, Jill was involved in a serious car accident that resulted in a broken femur. She was riding in the REM Home van on the way back from an event when a car traveling on the wrong side of the road caused a chain reaction. Everyone in front of them slammed on their brakes, and the van ended up rear-ending the car ahead. Thankfully, there were no fatalities, but the accident changed Jill’s life and ultimately led her to become a resident at Accura in March of 2023.

Jill wants everyone to know a few things about herself. She describes herself as having a “twisted soul,” which means she doesn’t like having pity parties and instead uses a sarcastic sense of humor when things get tough. She gets along well with others and loves quotes and sayings, especially sarcastic and spiritual ones. She loves anything related to The Grinch and would really enjoy meeting more people. She said that if anyone would like to send her cards or write her a letter, she would truly appreciate it.

Jill says that her favorite thing about Accura Healthcare of Ames is the staff. She appreciates the variety of personalities and feels that they truly care about her. She also loves that her mom and sister live nearby, making it easy and convenient to spend time with them.

If you ask the staff what they love about Jill, they will say she is clever, spontaneously sarcastic, eccentric, funny, and has a big heart. We are so lucky to have Jill here at Accura Healthcare of Ames, along with all our other wonderful residents.

Our January Employee of the Month was a unanimous decision made by both staff and residents, and it’s easy to see why. Kyle Simon exemplifies what it means to be an extraordinary nurse. Every day, he demonstrates compassion, dedication, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of the residents in our care.

Kyle listens attentively to residents’ questions and concerns, taking the time to understand their needs and ensuring they receive the support they require. When a situation arises that he cannot handle alone, he doesn’t hesitate to seek out the appropriate resources or colleagues who can, ensuring that residents always feel heard, valued, and supported. His advocacy for residents goes beyond simply performing his duties, he actively works to make their lives better, brighter, and more comfortable in every way he can.

One of Kyle’s most remarkable qualities is the personal connection he builds with each resident. No matter how busy his schedule may be, he always makes time to sit with residents, chat about their day, and offer a listening ear or friendly conversation. Residents know that when Kyle is around, they are genuinely cared for, and staff often hear them comment on how much they appreciate his kindness, attention, and warmth.

Kyle is also highly respected by his coworkers, who describe him as both a team player and a natural leader. He consistently goes above and beyond his job description, willingly taking on tasks that may not be expected of him, and always completing them with a positive attitude and a smile. Whether it’s helping a colleague, stepping in during a busy shift, or ensuring that everyone on the team feels supported, Kyle demonstrates reliability and dedication that inspires those around him.

Described by staff as having a heart of gold, Kyle is dependable, hardworking, and truly one of a kind. He treats every resident and coworker with respect, patience, and kindness, making a lasting impact on the people around him. By always putting residents first and supporting his teammates, Kyle truly embodies the Accura way, Partners in Care, Family for Life. His presence is not only noticed but deeply appreciated, and his contributions make every day better for both residents and staff alike.

Everyone knows that when Kyle is on duty, they can expect a day filled with care, positivity, and dedication. He embodies the best qualities of a nurse, a colleague, and a friend, and for these reasons, Kyle Simon is truly deserving this recognition as our January Employee of the Month.

🎨 We had a wonderful art show this afternoon with our favorite local artist, Elizabeth Sanow! She shared a variety of her paintings, drawings, and digital art, and our residents absolutely loved experiencing her creativity up close.

We’re so thankful she took the time out of her day to not only showcase her beautiful artwork, but also to explain each piece and the inspiration behind it. We especially loved seeing how passionate and proud she was of her work. It truly was a special afternoon filled with art, conversation, and lots of smiles 💙

🎄✨ What a wonderful day at Accura celebrating our annual Christmas party with our residents! It was truly heartwarming to see so many smiles, laughter, and time spent together with residents, staff, and family members.

A huge thank you to St. Cecilia’s and the City of Ames for their generous gift donations—you helped make the day extra special. And of course, a special visit from Santa brought even more joy to the celebration! 🎅❤️

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Seeing our residents happy, engaged, and enjoying each other’s company made the day unforgettable. 💚

Our Upside-Down Philosophy

Accura HealthCare is an Iowa based healthcare company that manages and operates 32 skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers, 13 assisted living centers, and 1 independent center. Accura embraces an upside-down organization philosophy that places residents, patients, and direct care employees at the very top of the organizational chart. In addition, Accura chooses not to be referenced as a corporate office, but rather a Resource Center. The lower an employee is on the chart (thus having more leadership) the more responsibility they have to be a resource to those above them.

Accura’s organizational philosophy creates an upside-down triangle that is reflected in the company's logo. Also visible within the triangle of the logo is one person caring for another; this represents the meaning of the company name. "Accura" is Latin, meaning to take care of or to give attention to.

As members of the Accura team, we all embrace our mission which is "to be partners in care and family for life". As we strive to deliver on our mission, we will do this by adhering to our values of trust, integrity, accountability, commitment, and kindness.
