If you're a parent of a little one, you've probably heard the term "Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease" (HFMD)—but what exactly is it?
HFMD is a common childhood illness caused by a virus, and while it can look a bit scary, it’s usually mild and passes in about a week. It often starts with a fever and sore throat, followed by small, red spots or blisters on the hands, feet, and in the mouth. Some children may also develop a rash on the legs or bottom.
It spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, and even through touch—so it’s no surprise it often pops up in daycare and preschool settings.
✨️ The good news? With rest, fluids, and lots of TLC, most kids bounce back quickly. As always, if you're unsure or worried about your child's symptoms, it's best to check in with your healthcare provider.
Symptoms to watch for
Fever
Sore throat
Painful red spots or blisters on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth
Sometimes, a rash on the buttocks or legs
Loss of appetite and irritability in infants
For families with little ones: While HFMD can look alarming, it’s typically mild and clears up on its own within 7–10 days. Keeping your child hydrated, comfortable, and resting is key. And of course, always consult your pediatrician if you're concerned about symptoms or if your child seems unwell.
